Abstract

The Wigner distribution function (WDF) for the time-dependent quadratic Hamiltonian system is investigated in the squeezed Schrödinger cat states with the use of Lewis–Riesenfeld theory of invariants. The nonclassical aspects of the system produced by superposition of two distinct squeezed states are analyzed with emphasis on their application into special systems beyond simple harmonic oscillator. An application of our development to the measurement of quantum state by reconstructing the WDF via Autler–Townes spectroscopy is addressed. In addition, we considered particular models such as Cadirola–Kanai oscillator, frequency stable damped harmonic oscillator, and harmonic oscillator with time-variable frequency as practical applications with the object of promoting the understanding of nonclassical effects associated with the WDF.

Time-dependent Wigner distribution function employed in coherent Schrödinger cat states: |Ψ(t)⟩=N−1/2(|α⟩+eiφ|-α⟩)

Jeong Ryeol Choi, Kyu Hwang Yeon

The Wigner distribution function for the time-dependent quadratic Hamiltonian system in the coherent Schrodinger cat state is investigated. The type of state we consider is a superposition of two coherent states, which are by an angle of π out of phase with each other. The exact Wigner distribution function of the system is evaluated under a particular choice of phase, δc, q. Our development is employed for two special cases, namely, the Caldirola–Kanai oscillator and the frequency stable damped harmonic oscillator. On the basis of the diverse values of the Wigner distribution function that were plotted, we analyze the nonclassical behavior of the systems.

Reconstruction of the Wigner function of the Schrödinger-cat state via time-dependent Autler-Townes spectroscopy

Tasnim Azim, Sajid Qamar, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

Equivalent descriptions of the quantum state of the radiation field can be formulated in terms of the quasiprobability distributions such as P-representation, Q-representation, and the Wigner distribution function. The paper presents a physical and more realistic model for the reconstruction of the Wigner distribution function of the Schrödinger-cat state using time-dependent Autler-Townes spontaneous emission spectroscopy.

The time-dependent quantum harmonic oscillator: a pedagogical approach via the Lewis–Riesenfeld dynamical invariant method

Stanley Santiago Coelho, Lucas Queiroz, Danilo T. Alves

Abstract In quantum mechanics courses, students often solve the Schrödinger equation for the harmonic oscillator with time-independent parameters. However, time-dependent quantum harmonic oscillators are relevant in modeling several problems as, for instance, the description of quantum motion of particles in traps, shortcuts to adiabaticity, generation of squeezed states, as well as quantum scalar fields evolving in expanding universes. In the present paper, we discuss, with a pedagogical approach, the quantum harmonic oscillator with time-dependent frequency via the Lewis–Riesenfeld dynamical invariant method, revisiting the main steps to obtain the wave function associated with this model, and briefly discussing the relation between this oscillator and the generation of squeezed states. As examples of didactic applications of time-dependent harmonic oscillators and the Lewis–Riesenfeld method in quantum mechanics courses, we solve the following problems: the calculation of the transition probability associated with a harmonic oscillator which undergoes jumps in its frequency, and the analysis of the dynamics of a quantum particle in a Paul trap.

Introduction to quantum optics

Vladimir I. Man’ko

The theory of quantum propagator and time‐dependent integrals of motion in quantum optics is reviewed as well as the properties of the Wigner function, Q‐function, and coherent state representation. Propagators and wave functions of the free particle, the harmonic oscillator, and the oscillator with varying frequency are studied using time‐dependent integrals of motion linear in position and momentum. Such nonclassical states of light (of quantum systems) as squeezed states, correlated states, even and odd coherent states (Schrödinger cat states) are considered. Photon distribution functions of Schrödinger cat male and female states are given, and the photon distribution function of squeezed vacuum is derived using the theory of the oscillator with varying parameters. Properties of multivariable Hermite polynomials used for the description of the multimode squeezed and correlated light and polymode Schrödinger cats are studied.

Squeezing and adiabaticity breaking in time-dependent quantum harmonic oscillators

Mattia Orlandini, Beatrice Donelli, Lorenzo Buffoni +1 more

The quantum harmonic oscillator with time-dependent frequency is a paradigmatic model of driven quantum dynamics and one of the few nontrivial systems that admits an exact analytical solution. In this review paper, we present a unified treatment of the time-dependent oscillator based on the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant method, Bogoliubov transformations and the Ermakov-Pinney equation. We show how these approaches naturally connect to squeezing for the description of excitations production, and to the breakdown of adiabaticity under generic frequency protocols. Exact results for sudden quenches and smooth ramps are discussed in detail. By explicitly bridging invariant methods and squeezing formalism, this review is meant to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding nonequilibrium dynamics in quadratic potentials, with applications ranging from thermodynamics and condensed matter to quantum control theory.

FRESNEL OPERATOR, SQUEEZED STATE AND WIGNER FUNCTION FOR CALDIROLA–KANAI HAMILTONIAN

Shuai Wang, Hong‐Chun Yuan, Hong-Yi Fan

Based on the technique of integration within an ordered product (IWOP) of operators, we introduce the Fresnel operator for converting a kind of time-dependent Hamiltonian into the standard harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian. The Fresnel operator with the parameters A, B, C, D corresponds to classical optical Fresnel transformation, these parameters are the solution to a set of coupled partial differential equations set up in the above-mentioned converting process. In this way, the Caldirola–Kanai Hamiltonian has been easily converted into the standard harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian. And then the exact wave function solution of the Schrödinger equation governed by the Caldirola–Kanai Hamiltonian is obtained, which represents a squeezed number state. The corresponding Wigner function is derived by virtue of the Weyl ordered form of the Wigner operator and the order-invariance of Weyl ordered operators under similar transformations.
