Decoherence In Quantum Dot Charge Qubits: The Role Of Electromagnetic Fluctuations

James M. McCracken

Lateral semiconductor quantum dot structures have been proposed as an effective quantum bit (qubit) for quantum computation. A single excess electron with the freedom to move between two capacitively coupled quantum dots creates a `pseudo'-spin system with the same qubit behavior as the more natural two level system of a single electron spin. The excess electron in the double dot system is restricted to one of the two dots, thereby creating two separate and distinct states (usually referred to as |L> and |R>). The benefit of these charge qubits lie in the relative ease with which they can be manipulated and created. Experiments have been performed in this area and have shown controllable coherent oscillations and thus efficient single-qubit operations. However, the decoherence rates observed in the experiments is still quite high, making double dot charge qubits not very appealing for large-scale implementations. The following work describes the effect of the electromagnetic (EM) environment of the double quantum dot system on the decoherence of the charge state. Sources of decoherence in similar systems have been extensively investigated before and this paper follows a close theoretical framework to previous work done in the area. The effect of the EM environment can been seen in the calculations discussed below, although it is clear that the decoherence seen in experiments cannot be fully explained by the voltage fluctuations as they are investigated here. The limitations of the calculations are discussed and improvements are suggested.

Non-Markovian dynamics and phonon decoherence of a double quantum dot charge qubit

Xian-Ting Liang

In this paper we investigate decoherence times of a double quantum dot (DQD) charge qubit due to it coupling with acoustic phonon baths. We individually consider the acoustic piezoelectric as well as deformation coupling phonon baths in the qubit environment. The decoherence times are calculated with two kinds of methods. One of them is based on the qusiadiabatic propagator path integral (QUAPI) and the other is based on Bloch equations, and two kinds of results are compared. It is shown that the theoretical decoherence times of the DQD charge qubit are shorter than the experimental reported results. It implies that the phonon couplings to the qubit play a subordinate role, resulting in the decoherence of the qubit.

Sudden transitions and scaling behavior of geometric quantum correlation for two qubits in quantum critical environments at finite temperature

Da-Wei Luo, Jing‐Bo Xu

We investigate the phenomenon of sudden transitions in geometric quantum correlation of two qubits in spin chain environments at finite temperature. It is shown that when only one qubit is coupled to the spin environment, the geometric discord exhibits a double sudden transition behavior, which is closely related to the quantum criticality of the spin chain environment. When two qubits are uniformly coupled to a common spin chain environment, the geometric discord is found to display a sudden transition behavior whereby the system transits from pure classical decoherence to pure quantum decoherence. Moreover, an interesting scaling behavior is revealed for the frozen time, and we also present a scheme to prolong the time during which the discord remains constant by applying bang–bang pulses.
