Expectation values and density matrices in the Coupled‐Cluster theory

Abstract

Abstract A scheme for calculating expectation values in coupled‐cluster wave functions is given. The unlinked terms originating from the norm of the wave function are eliminated. Hermiticity and trace conditions for the density matrices are exhibited in such a way as to guarantee their conservation in any reasonable truncation scheme.

A BIOGRAPHY OF THE COUPLED CLUSTER METHOD

Hermann G. Kümmel

The origins of the coupled cluster method are described. Special attention is paid to the arguments put forward for the exponential structure of the wave functions. Various approximation schemes invented during the last 40 years are presented. The problems arising from these approximations necessarily truncating or destroying the exponential form are discussed and ways to deal with them are described.

Explicitly connected expansion for the average value of an observable in the coupled‐cluster theory

Bogumił Jeziorski, Robert Moszyński

Abstract An explicitly connected commutator expansion for the average value of an observable in the coupled‐cluster theory is derived. Specifically, it is shown that the expectation value of an operator for the state Ψ, related to the Fermi vacuum Φ by the exponential Ansatz ψ = eT Φ, is expressed as a finite commutator series containing the cluster operator T and an auxiliary operator S, defined by a linear equation involving again a finite commutator series in T. The above result is applied to derive the explicitly connected commutator form of the order‐by‐order many‐body perturbation theory (MBPT) expansion for the expectation values and density matrices. We also show how the commutator expansion derived by us can be used as a basis for size‐extensive infinite‐order summation techniques. An operator technique of eliminating the nonlocal, “off‐energy shell” denominators from MBPT expressions is proposed and applied to obtain compact commutator formulas for the expectation values of one‐ and two‐electron operators through the fourth and third order, respectively, and for the correlation energy through the fifth order of perturbation theory. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Structure of a Many-Particle Quantum-Mechanical Medium

Robert Karplus, Kenneth Watson

A discussion is given of the wave function of a many-particle system. The wave function itself is quite complex, containing all combinations of "clusters" of interacting particles. Expectation values, however may be calculated in a straightforward manner, as is shown in detail. In particular, the expectation value of an operator may be expanded in "linked clusters," each "linked cluster" being weighted with its probability of occurrence in the wave function. The theory is applied to the calculation of the momentum spectrum and pair correlation functin for a dilute gas, a degenerate Fermi-Dirac system, and a degenerate Bose-Einstein system of hard spheres.

Stochastic coupled cluster theory: Efficient sampling of the coupled cluster expansion

Charles J. C. Scott, Alex J. W. Thom

We consider the sampling of the coupled cluster expansion within stochastic coupled cluster theory. Observing the limitations of previous approaches due to the inherently non-linear behavior of a coupled cluster wavefunction representation, we propose new approaches based on an intuitive, well-defined condition for sampling weights and on sampling the expansion in cluster operators of different excitation levels. We term these modifications even and truncated selections, respectively. Utilising both approaches demonstrates dramatically improved calculation stability as well as reduced computational and memory costs. These modifications are particularly effective at higher truncation levels owing to the large number of terms within the cluster expansion that can be neglected, as demonstrated by the reduction of the number of terms to be sampled when truncating at triple excitations by 77% and hextuple excitations by 98%.

A VARIATIONAL COUPLED-CLUSTER THEORY

Y. XIAN

We develop a general quantum many-body theory in configuration space by extending the traditional coupled-cluster method to a variational formalism. A set of distribution functions are introduced to evaluate the expectation value of the Hamiltonian. An algebraic technique for calculations of these distribution functions via a set of self-consistent set of equations is given. As a demonstration, we apply this method to a quantum antiferromagnetic spin model. It is shown that one of the lowest-order approximations within this new technique agrees with the traditional coupled-cluster method. Comparison with the method of correlated basis functions is also made.

Variational Jastrow coupled-cluster theory of quantum many-body systems

Yang Xian

We study many-body correlations in the ground state of a general quantum system of bosons or fermions by including an additional Jastrow function in our recently proposed variational coupled-cluster method. Our approach combines the advantages of state-dependent correlations in the coupled-cluster theory and of the strong, short-ranged correlations of the Jastrow function. We apply a generalized linked-cluster expansion for the Jastrow wave function and provide a detailed analysis for practical evaluation of the Hamiltonian expectation value as an energy functional of the Jastrow function and the bare density-distribution functions introduced and calculated in our earlier publications; a simple, first-order energy functional is derived and detailed formulas for the higher-order contributions are provided. Our energy functional does not suffer the divergence as most coupled-cluster calculations often do when applying to Hamiltonians with hardcore potentials. We also discuss possible applications of our technique, including applications to strongly correlated fermion systems.
