We have demonstrated in situ detection of two-dimensional vortex distributions in a single-component Bose-Einstein condensate. We discuss development of the next generation quantum vortex microscope and implications for observations of superfluid dynamics.

Formation and Decay of Vortex Lattices in Bose-Einstein Condensates at Finite Temperatures

J. R. Abo-Shaeer, Chandra Raman, Wolfgang Ketterle

The dynamics of vortex lattices in stirred Bose-Einstein condensates have been studied at finite temperatures. The decay of the vortex lattice was observed nondestructively by monitoring the centrifugal distortions of the rotating condensate. The formation of the vortex lattice could be deduced from the increasing contrast of the vortex cores observed in ballistic expansion. In contrast to the decay, the formation of the vortex lattice is insensitive to temperature change.

Controlled vortex-sound interactions in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

Nicholas G. Parker, Nick P. Proukakis, Carlo Barenghi +1 more

The dynamics of vortex in a trapped quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), which produce vortex-sound interaction was discussed. It was observed that a vortex precession in a trapped quasi-2D BEC at low temperature emits dipolar radiation, which becomes modified into a spiral wave pattern due to the motion of the vortex. The results show that the vortex energy decays at a rate proportional to its acceleration squared and inversely proportional to the precession frequency. It was suggested that sound emission and reabsorption can be controlled by varying the depth of the dimple.
