Evolution of the Higgs mode in a fermion superfluid with tunable interactions

Boyang Liu, Hui Zhai, Shizhong Zhang

In this work we present a coherent picture for the evolution of Higgs mode in neutral $s$-wave fermion superfluids. As the strength of attractive interaction between fermions increases from the BCS to the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) regime we find that the Higgs mode in the fermionic superfluids is pushed to higher energy while at the same time, gradually loses its spectral weight, which is because the system is tuned away from Lorentz invariance. Furthermore, when damping is taken into account, the spectral weight of the Higgs mode is significantly broadened due to coupling to phase mode in the whole BEC-BCS crossover.

Nonequilibrium relaxation in neutral BCS superconductors: Ginzburg-Landau approach with Landau damping in real time

S. M. Alamoudi, D. Boyanovsky, Shang-Yung Wang

We present a field-theoretical method to obtain consistently the equations of motion for small amplitude fluctuations of the order parameter directly in real time for a homogeneous, neutral BCS superconductor. This method allows to study the nonequilibrium relaxation of the order parameter as an initial value problem. We obtain the Ward identities and the effective actions for small phase the amplitude fluctuations to one-loop order. Focusing on the long wavelength, low-frequency limit near the critical point, we obtain the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau effective action to one-loop order, which is nonlocal as a consequence of Landau damping. The nonequilibrium relaxation of the phase and amplitude fluctuations is studied directly in real time. The long-wavelength phase fluctuation (Bogoliubov-Anderson-Goldstone mode) is overdamped by Landau damping and the relaxation time scale diverges at the critical point, revealing critical slowing down.

Landau damping in a mixture of Bose and Fermi superfluids

Huitao Shen, Wei Zheng

We study Landau damping in a Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture at finite temperatures. We find that at low temperatures, the Landau damping rate will be exponentially suppressed on both the BCS side and the BEC side of the Fermi superfluid. The momentum dependence of the damping rate is obtained, and it is quite different from the BCS side to the BEC side since the dominated low-energy excitations are different on the two sides. The relation between our result and the collective mode experiment in the recently realized Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture is also discussed.

Collective modes in non-Hermitian fermionic superfluids

Gabriel Angelo V. Vila, Kristian Hauser Villegas

The Higgs and Nambu-Goldstone modes are paradigmatic collective excitations in superconductors and superfluids. These modes are commonly analyzed within the pseudospin formulation of BCS theory, where the dynamics are obtained from the Heisenberg equations of motion for pseudospins. However, this construction becomes inconsistent when directly extended to non-Hermitian systems. In this work, we develop a consistent pseudospin framework for non-Hermitian fermionic superfluids based on the metricized formulation of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics. We apply this formalism to a driven non-Hermitian BCS-type Hamiltonian with complex pairing interaction and analyze its collective excitation spectrum. We find that, in addition to the conventional Higgs (amplitude) mode, the system hosts a novel phase mode that has no counterpart in Hermitian superfluids. Remarkably, this mode is gapped even in the absence of the Anderson-Higgs mechanism, as is the case in neutral superfluids. Furthermore, the resonance spectrum depends explicitly on the initial nongauge phase of the complex order parameter and the dynamical response remains finite at resonance, in contrast to the divergence characteristic of Hermitian systems. These resonances disappear upon the emergence of exceptional points.
