Cold-atom shaping with MEMS scanning mirrors

Alan Bregazzi, Paul Janin, S. Dyer +6 more

We demonstrate the integration of micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS) scanning mirrors as active elements for the local optical pumping of ultra-cold atoms in a magneto-optical trap. A pair of MEMS mirrors steer a focused resonant beam through a cloud of trapped atoms shelved in the F = 1 ground-state of 87 Rb for spatially selective fluorescence of the atom cloud. Two-dimensional control is demonstrated by forming geometrical patterns along the imaging axis of the cold atom ensemble. Such control of the atomic ensemble with a microfabricated mirror pair could find applications in single atom selection, local optical pumping, and arbitrary cloud shaping. This approach has significant potential for miniaturization and in creating portable control systems for quantum optic experiments.

Measurement of the Number and Temperature of the Cold atoms EIT Medium

Hai Wang

The experimental setup for cooling and trapping~(87)Rb atoms in magneto-optical trap(MOT) and the process of them are briefly introduced in this paper. The number of cold atoms is measured by detecting the fluorescence emitted from~(87)Rb atoms. The laser probe beam is set at the positions which are 4mm,7mm,10mm below the atoms cloud, the short-distance time-of-flight(TOF) Absorption signals are obtained during the falling of atoms. The average temperature of cold atoms is obtained by numerical simulating. The results show that the number of cold atoms is about 10~(9),the density is about 10~(11)/cm~3 and the cooling temperature of atomic cloud is about 200 μK,such cold atoms can be used as good EIT medium.

Realization of High Optical Density Rb Magneto-optical Trap

Yanxu Han, Liu Y, Chunhong Zhang +2 more

We report experimental demonstration of a magneto-optical trap (MOT) of Rb atoms with a high optical density. With 2.2-cm-diameter cooling laser beams, we achieve an optical density of nearly 11 for about 2.6 × 10 10 trapped Rb atoms with the beam intensity of about 6.6 mW/cm per beam. The temperature of the cold atoms is about 250 μK. Furthermore, by ramping the magnetic field gradient from 8 G/cm to about 20 G/cm, the atomic cloud in the MOT is compressed and the optical density is up to 16.
