Abstract

Absorption of tunable coherent VUV radiation is used to measure fine‐structure splitting and oscillator strength, and to estimate hyperfine splitting of the Cs 109.1 nm transition, which originates on a quasi‐metastable level.

Laser-spectroscopy measurement of the fine-structure splitting 23P1–23P2 of He4

Laser spectroscopy has been performed on a beam of neutral $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ atoms. By using transverse laser cooling and focusing, we are able to prepare a bright beam of atoms in the metastable state $2\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{}^{3}{S}_{1}$ deflected from the original effusive atomic beam. The initial state preparation is completed with optical pumping on the $2\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{}^{3}{P}_{1}\ensuremath{\leftarrow}2\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{}^{3}{S}_{1}$ transition at the wavelength of 1083 nm, followed by laser spectroscopy on the $2\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{}^{3}{P}_{1,2}\ensuremath{\leftarrow}2\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{}^{3}{S}_{1}$ transitions. The $2\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{}^{3}{P}_{1}\ensuremath{-}2\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{}^{3}{P}_{2}$ fine-structure splitting is determined to be $2\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}291\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}177.69\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.36\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{kHz}$. The quantum interference effect is included in data extraction. This is the most precise laser spectroscopy measurement of the interval. Our result is in agreement with both the latest QED-based calculation and the most precise measurement conducted with microwave spectroscopy.

Doppler-free selective reflection spectroscopy of the 6 s 2 S 1 / 2 → 7 p 2 P 3 / 2 transition of Caesium using an optical nanocell

Armen D. Sargsyan, Rodolphe Momier, David G. Sarkisyan

Abstract Selective reflection (SR) spectroscopy of the 6 s 2 S 1 / 2 → 7 p 2 P 3 / 2 electric dipole transition of Caesium ( λ = 456 nm) is performed for the first time using a nanometric-thin cell (L = 50–1500 nm, T = 200 ∘ C). We successfully form narrow resonances corresponding to the F g = 3 , 4 → F e = 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 hyperfine transitions. All transitions are well spectrally resolved, and the geometry of the cell allows us to obtain a strong 30 times narrowing of the Doppler width with a single beam pass. For lower thicknesses ( L < 400 nm), we observe a red shift of the SR lines, which we attribute to atom-surface interactions, and provide estimates of the C 3 interaction coefficient. The oscillator strengths of the 6 s 2 S 1 / 2 → 7 p 2 P 3 / 2 hyperfine transitions are about two orders of magnitude smaller than that of the Cs D 2 line at 852 nm. Our experimental measurements are in good agreement with theoretical calculations. We emphasize the advantage of nanocell spectroscopy compared to the well-known saturated absorption method and present possible applications.

Generation of coherent tunable VUV radiation near the Ly-β transition of atomic hydrogen

John F. Reintjes

Third-harmonic conversion of light from a frequency-tuned XeCl laser is used to generate coherent vacuum-ultraviolet radiation that is tunable from 102.55 to 102.83 nm, a range that includes the Ly-β transition of atomic hydrogen at 102.57 nm. The use of this radiation for the detection of neutral hydrogen atoms by resonance fluorescence is discussed.
