Coherent zero-field magnetization resonance in a dipolar spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

Wenxian Zhang, S. Yi, Michael Chapman +1 more

With current magnetic-field shielding and high-precision detection in dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, it is possible to experimentally detect the low- or zero-field nonsecular dipolar dynamics. Here we analytically investigate the zero-field nonsecular magnetic dipolar interaction effect, with an emphasis on magnetization dynamics in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate under the single spatial mode approximation within the mean-field theory. Due to the biaxial nature of the dipolar interaction, a novel resonance occurs in the condensate magnetization oscillation, in contrast to the previous assumption of a conserved magnetization in strong magnetic fields. Furthermore, we propose a dynamical-decoupling detection method for such a resonance, which cancels the stray magnetic fields in experiment but restores the magnetization dynamics. Our results shed light on the dipolar systems and may find potential applications beyond cold atoms.

Magnetic resonance, especially spin echo, in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Masashi Yasunaga, Makoto Tsubota

Magnetic resonance, especially NMR and ESR, has been studied in magnetic materials for a long time, having been used in various fields. Spin echo is typical phenomenon in magnetic resonance. The magnetic resonance should be applied to spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We numerically study spin echo of a spinor BEC in a gradient magnetic field by calculating the spin-1 two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equations, obtaining the recovery of the signal of the spins, which is called spin echo. We will discuss the relation between the spin echo and the Stern-Gelrach separation in the system.

Gravitational and collective effects in an output coupler for a Bose-Einstein condensate in an atomic trap

Weiping Zhang, Daniel F. Walls

A three-component vector quantum field theory is developed to describe the electronic-spin-resonance interaction of a magnetically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with a radio frequency field. The theory is directly applied to simulate the recent experiment of Mewes et al. for an output coupler for a Bose-Einstein condensate in a magnetic trap [Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 582 (1997)]. By employing the mean-field approach, we study the collective dynamics of the multicomponent matter field via the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. Including the effect of gravity, we study the spin-resonance Rabi oscillations for the three-component Bose-Einstein condensate in three ground-state hyperfine levels and simulate the dynamic expansion of the condensate components coupled out of the magnetic trap.
