Magnetic resonance spectroscopy and characterization of magnetic phases for spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Akiyuki Tokuno, Shun Uchino

The response of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates to dynamical modulation of magnetic fields is discussed with linear response theory. As an experimentally measurable quantity, the energy absorption rate (EAR) is considered, and the response function is found to access quadratic spin correlations which come from the perturbation of the quadratic Zeeman term. By applying our formalism to spin-1 condensates, we demonstrate that the EAR spectrum as a function of the modulation frequency is able to characterize the different magnetically ordered phases.

Magnetic resonance, especially spin echo, in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Masashi Yasunaga, Makoto Tsubota

Magnetic resonance, especially NMR and ESR, has been studied in magnetic materials for a long time, having been used in various fields. Spin echo is typical phenomenon in magnetic resonance. The magnetic resonance should be applied to spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We numerically study spin echo of a spinor BEC in a gradient magnetic field by calculating the spin-1 two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equations, obtaining the recovery of the signal of the spins, which is called spin echo. We will discuss the relation between the spin echo and the Stern-Gelrach separation in the system.

Magnetic-modulation spectroscopy of an atomic Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover: Dissociation spectra in the Bose-Einstein condensate regime

Jesús Plata

The effect of magnetic-field modulation on a Fermi gas of atoms in the BCS-BEC crossover is studied analytically. Recent experimental findings on the system response to a sinusoidal variation of the field are explained. Specifically, the dissociation processes induced by the modulation in the Bose-Einstein condensate regime are described. The role played by the frequency, amplitude, and application time of the perturbation in the emergence of the observed behavior is clarified. The results uncover also the relevance of the detuning from the Feshbach resonance to the appearance of particular spectral features. The applicability of the field modulation as a spectroscopic tool for probing the crossover is discussed.
