Rydberg Interaction-Induced Distortion of the Autler–Townes Spectra in Cold Lithium Atoms

Sergey A. Saakyan, Nikita Morozov, Vladimir A. Sautenkov +1 more

In this article, effects of the strong long-range interaction of Rydberg atoms on the Autler–Townes splitting spectrum are investigated. Preliminary results are obtained for various excitation times and Rydberg atom densities. The 2S1/2 and 2P1/2 levels of lithium-7 are coupled with strong laser field and probed by another laser via excitation into a 70S Rydberg level. Interactions between Rydberg atoms excited by the probe beam lead to the broadening of the Autler–Townes spectra. At high concentrations of Rydberg atoms, a suppression of the excitation of the Autler–Townes peak at red detuning is observed.

Observation of effects of inter-atomic interaction on Autler–Townes splitting in cold Rydberg atoms

Abstract We demonstrate the effect of inter-atomic interaction in highly excited Rydberg atoms via Autler–Townes (AT) splitting in cold atoms. We measure the AT splitting of the { 5 S 1 / 2 , F = 2 } → { 5 P 3 / 2 , F ′ = 3 } transition of 87Rb atoms arising due to the strong coupling of the transition via the cooling beams used for the magneto-optical trap (MOT). The AT splitting is probed using a weakly coupled transition from { 5 P 3 / 2 , F ′ = 3 } state to highly excited Rydberg states for a wide range of principal quantum numbers ( n = 35 − 117 ) . We observe the AT splitting via trap-loss spectroscopy in the MOT by scanning the probe frequency. We observe a drastic increase in the broadening of the AT splitting signal as a result of interaction-induced dephasing effect in cold Rydberg atoms for highly excited Rydberg states with principal quantum number n > 100. We explain our observations using theoretical modeling and numerical simulations based on the Lindblad Master equation. We find a good agreement of the results of the numerical simulation with the experimental measurements.

Asymmetry Analysis of the Autler–Townes Doublet in the Trap-Loss Fluorescence Spectroscopy of Cesium MOT with Single-Step Rydberg Excitation

Xiaokai Hou, Yuewei Wang, Jun He +1 more

The Autler–Townes (AT) doublet, a fundamental manifestation of quantum interference effects, serves as a critical tool for studying the dynamic behavior of Rydberg atoms. Here, we investigate the asymmetry of the Autler–Townes (AT) doublet in the trap-loss fluorescence spectroscopy (TLFS) of cesium (Cs) atoms confined in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) with single-step Rydberg excitation using a 319-nm ultraviolet (UV) laser. A V-type three-level system involving the ground state 6S1/2 (F = 4), excited state 6P3/2 (F′ = 5), and Rydberg state (nP3/2 (mJ = +3/2)) is theoretically modeled to analyze the nonlinear dependence of the AT doublet’s asymmetry and interval on the cooling laser’s detuning. Experiments reveal that as the cooling laser detuning Δ1 decreases from −15 MHz to −10 MHz, the AT doublet exhibits increasing symmetry, while its interval shows a nonlinear decrease. Theoretical simulations based on the density matrix equation and Lindblad master equation align closely with experimental data, confirming the model’s validity. This study provides insights into quantum interference dynamics in multi-level systems and offers a systematic approach for optimizing precision measurements in cold atom spectroscopy.
