Combining local and non-local correlations from the Dual Boson perspective

E. A. Stepanov, A. Huber, Erik G. C. P. van Loon +2 more

Extended dynamical mean-field theory (EDMFT) is insufficient to describe non-local effects in strongly correlated systems, since corrections to the mean-field solution are generally large. We present an efficient scheme for the construction of diagrammatic extensions of EDMFT that avoids usual double counting problem by using an exact change of variables (the dual boson formalism) to distinguish the correlations included in the mean-field solution and those beyond. With a computational efficiency comparable to EDMFT+GW approach, our scheme significantly improves on the charge order transition phase boundary in the extended Hubbard model.

Perturbative calculation of non-local corrections to dynamical mean field theory

V. I. Tokar, R. Monnier

A technique allowing for a perturbative treatment of nonlocal corrections to the single-site dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) in finite dimensions is developed. It is based on the observation that in the case of strong electron correlation the one-electron Green's function is strongly spatially damped so that its intersite matrix elements may be considered as small perturbations. Because the non-local corrections are at least quadratic in these matrix elements, DMFT in such cases may be a very accurate approximation in dimensions d = 1-3. This observation provides a rigorous justification for the application of DMFT to physical systems. Furthermore, the technique allows for a systematic evaluation of the nonlocal corrections. This is illustrated with the calculation of the magnetic short range order parameter for nearest neighbor spins in the half filled Hubbard model on the square lattice in its insulating phase which exhibits an excellent agreement with the results of a recent cluster approach. As a second example we study the lowest order correction to the DMFT self-energy and its influence on the local density of states.

Second-order dual fermion for multi-orbital systems

Erik G. C. P. van Loon

Abstract In dynamical mean-field theory, the correlations between electrons are assumed to be purely local. The dual fermion approach provides a systematic way of adding non-local corrections to the dynamical mean-field theory starting point. Initial applications of this method were largely restricted to the single-orbital Hubbard model. Here, we present an implementation of second-order dual fermion for general multi-orbital systems and use this approach to investigate spatial correlations in SrVO 3 . In addition, the approach is benchmarked in several exactly solvable small systems.
