Use of entanglement in quantum optics

Abstract

Several recent demonstrations of two-particle interferometry are reviewed and shown to be examples of either color entanglement or beam entanglement. A device, called a number filter, is described and shown to be of value in preparing beam entanglements. Finally, we note that all three concepts (color and beam entaglement, and number filtering) may be extended to three or more particles.

Two-particle interferometry

Michael Horne, Abner Shimony, Anton Zeilinger

An exposition is given of the fundamental ideas of the recently opened field of two-particle interferometry, which employs spatially separated, quantum mechanically entangled two-particle states. These ideas are illustrated by a realizable arrangement, in which four beams are selected from the output of a laser-pumped down-converting crystal, with two beams interferometrically combined at one locus and two at another. When phase shifters are placed in these beams, the coincident count rates at the two loci will oscillate as the phases are varied, but the single count rates will not.

Photonic quantum circuits and quantum metrologies

Shigeki Takeuchi

In this talk, we review our works to realize optical quantum circuits using linear optics, including our recent experimental demonstration of a KLM CNOT gate and the realization of an ‘entanglement filter’. We will also report our current effort on the application of entanglement-enhanced metrology.

Direct production of three-color polarization entanglement for continuous variable

Zhihui Yan, Xiaojun Jia

The direct generation of discrete-variable three-photon polarization entanglement has been recently demonstrated [Nat. Photonics8, 801 (2014)10.1038/nphoton.2014.218NPAHBY1749-4885]. Here, we propose a feasible scheme to generate continuous-variable (CV) three-color polarization entangled states of light in a deterministic way. The method initially prepares a tripartite quadrature entanglement based on two cascaded nondegenerate optical parametric oscillators. The entangled modes are then coupled, respectively, with three strong coherent optical beams on polarized beam splitters, leading to the generation of the three-color CV polarization entanglement. The polarization entanglement is then verified by inseparability criterion and positive partial transposition criterion. Additionally, optimal parameters in practical conditions are obtained through numerical simulations, which could provide useful guidance for experimental implementations. The demonstrated CV three-color polarization entanglement is suitable in quantum information processing tasks relying on the direct interaction between spin of atoms and polarization of light.

Experimental realization of an optical entanglement filter

Ryo Okamoto, Jeremy L. O’Brien, Holger Friedrich Hofmann +3 more

The ability to filter quantum states is a key capability in quantum information science and technology, where one-qubit filters, or polarizers, have found wide application. Filtering on the basis of entanglement requires extension to multi-qubit filters with qubit-qubit interactions. Such devices have many important applications to quantum technologies.

Measurement of three-color optical quantum correlations in the above-threshold optical parametric oscillator

K. N. Cassemiro, Alessandro S. Villar, M. Martinelli +1 more

This paper presents an experimental demonstration of three-color quantum correlations between the bright pump, signal, and idler beams produced by an optical parametric oscillator (OPO). This paper shows that the degree of entanglement between the twin beams can be increased by using information from the pump beam.

An Entanglement Filter

Ryo Okamoto, Jeremy L. O’Brien, Holger Friedrich Hofmann +3 more

The ability to filter quantum states is a key capability in quantum information science and technology, in which one-qubit filters, or polarizers, have found wide application. Filtering on the basis of entanglement requires extension to multi-qubit filters with qubit-qubit interactions. We demonstrated an optical entanglement filter that passes a pair of photons if they have the desired correlations of their polarization. Such devices have many important applications to quantum technologies.
