Advances in the study of ion trap structures in quantum computation and simulation

Chenxu Wang, Ran He, Rui-Rui Li +6 more

Ion trap system is one of the main quantum systems to realize quantum computation and simulation. Various ion trap research groups worldwide jointly drive the continuous enrichment of ion trap structures, and develop a series of high-performance three-dimensional ion trap, two-dimensional ion trap chip, and ion traps with integrated components. The structure of ion trap is gradually developing towards miniaturization, high-optical-access and integration, and is demonstrating its outstanding ability in quantum control. Ion traps are able to trap increasingly more ions and precisely manipulate the quantum state of the system. In this review, we will summarize the evolution history of the ion trap structures in the past few decades, as well as the latest advances of trapped-ion-based quantum computation and simulation. Here we present a selection of representative examples of trap structures. We will summarize the progresses in the processing technology, robustness and versatility of ion traps, and make prospects for the realization of scalable quantum computation and simulation based on ion trap system.

The aim of this study is to fabricate a small-scale "2D ion trap array". By confining and laser-cooling atomic ions in this device, the quantum state of a "frustrated system" is realized, and eventually quantum simulations of this state can be done. An ion trap is a device to confine charged particles. In this study, several small-scale ion traps are arranged in a two-dimensional configuration, and one atomic ion (barium ion is assumed) is trapped in each ion trap. The frustrated system can be realized by arranging three small ion traps in an equilateral triangle. Because of the Coulomb interaction among the ions, energy varies depending on the position of the ions. This interaction is utilized to achieve the frustrated system. During this research period, a 2D ion trap array has been designed and fabricated. In this study, the "string ion trap", which was previously fabricated, is developed further into a "twisted string ion trap". In the twisted string ion trap, all the electrodes used in the ion trap are made of thin metal strings (tungsten wires with a diameter of 0.05 mm). This allows us to observe the laser-induced fluorescence from the trapped barium ion with higher sensitivity. Additionally, by arranging the metal strings in a twisted configuration, ions can be trapped in three dimensions with fewer electrodes. By increasing the degree of twist, we can also reduce the size of the ion trap. As a result, a small-scale 2D ion trap array can be realized using the twisted string ion trap. In this study, a twisted string ion trap that consists of three small ion traps in a 2D configuration is designed, and more than 100 parts for it are fabricated. In future, these parts are to be assembled for actual operation of the ion trap.

New scalable microfabrication method for surface ion traps and experimental results with trapped ions

Seokjun Hong, M. Lee, H. Cheon +4 more

This paper presents a new microfabrication method for surface ion traps and experimental results with trapped ions. Fabricating ion trap chips is a very formidable task because the top electrodes are vertically spaced more than 10 µm from the bottom electrodes with an indented dielectric layer in the middle. Previous ion traps were fabricated using TEOS timed etch or tungsten sacrificial etch techniques. This paper presents a new microfabrication method, using copper as a sacrificial material for an aluminum-oxide-aluminum ion trap structure. Using the developed method the overhang dimensions of the top aluminum electrodes can be accurately controlled. Fabricated ion trap chips are installed in a 1 × 10−11Torr vacuum environment for ion trapping experiments. Successful results in trapping strings of171Yb+and174Yb+ions as well as manipulating171Yb+ions for qubit operation are demonstrated.
