Formation of Triplet Positron-helium Bound State by Stripping of Positronium Atoms in Collision with Ground State Helium

Abstract

Formation of triplet positron-helium bound state by stripping of positronium atoms in collision with ground state helium JOSEPH DI RlENZI, College of Notre Dame of Maryland, RICHARD J. DRACHMAN, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center - The system consisting of a positron and a helium atom in the triplet state e(+)He(S-3)(sup e) was conjectured long ago to be stable [1]. Its stability has recently been established rigorously [2], and the values of the energies of dissociation into the ground states of Ps and He(+) have also been reported [3] and [4]. We have evaluated the cross-section for this system formed by radiative attachment of a positron in triplet He state and found it to be small [5]. The mechanism of production suggested here should result in a larger cross-section (of atomic size) which we are determining using the Born approximation with simplified initial and final wave functions.

Radiative attachment of a positron to atomic helium in the triplet state

Joseph Di Rienzi, Richard J. Drachman

In this study we evaluate the cross section for forming the nonrelativistically bound state of a positron with the helium triplet atom by radiative attachment. Although this cross-section was expected to be small compared with a competing rearrangement process involving positronium and ground-state helium, this calculation is a first step which should be useful for experimental production of this interesting system

Nonradiative formation of the positron-helium triplet bound state

Joseph Di Rienzi, Richard J. Drachman

We have previously calculated the cross section for radiative formation of the interesting bound state consisting of a positron bound to helium, where the atomic electrons are in the triplet spin state. That process uses the metastable triplet helium system as target, and, as expected, it has a very small cross section. In this paper we examine a more probable process in which the state of interest is produced in an exchange rearrangement collision between a positronium atom and the singlet helium ground state: $\mathrm{Ps}+\mathrm{He}(^{1}S^{\mathrm{e}})\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{Ps}{\mathrm{He}}^{+}(^{3}S^{\mathrm{e}})+{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$. The present calculation is done in the plane-wave Born approximation, using simple initial and final wave functions and compares post and prior forms.

Formation of positron-atom bound states in collisions between Rydberg Ps and neutral atoms

A. R. Swann, D. B. Cassidy, Adam Deller +1 more

Predicted 20 years ago, positron binding to neutral atoms has not yet been observed experimentally. A scheme is proposed to detect positron-atom bound states by colliding Rydberg positronium (Ps) with neutral atoms. Estimates of the charge-transfer reaction cross section are obtained using the first Born approximation for a selection of neutral atom targets and a wide range of incident Ps energies and principal quantum numbers. We also estimate the corresponding Ps ionization cross section. The accuracy of the calculations is tested by comparison with earlier predictions for charge transfer in Ps collisions with hydrogen and antihydrogen. We describe an existing Rydberg Ps beam suitable for producing positron-atom bound states and estimate signal rates based on the calculated cross sections and realistic experimental parameters. We conclude that the proposed methodology is capable of producing such states and of testing theoretical predictions of their binding energies.

Low-energy positron scattering from metastable helium

Anonymous, Hui-Li Han, Ting-Yun Shi +1 more

Low-energy positron scattering from singlet and triplet metastable He($1s2s$) is investigated using the $R$-matrix propagation method in hyperspherical coordinates. Elastic and positronium-formation cross sections are reported, and near-threshold resonance structures are analyzed in terms of eigenphase sums and the time-delay matrix. For the triplet target, the calculated cross sections are in agreement with available convergent-close-coupling results and display the expected threshold behavior. Beyond the known $S$-wave features, Feshbach resonance series in higher partial waves extending up to highly excited atomic thresholds are systematically identified. The time-delay matrix further uncovers hidden resonances that produce obvious structures in the positronium-formation cross sections.

Positron annihilation in the positron-helium ion e+[He(2S3)]

Alexei M. Frolov

The $({e}^{\ensuremath{-}},{e}^{+})$-pair annihilation is considered in the positron-helium ${e}^{+}[\mathrm{He}(2\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{3}S)]$ four-body ion, in which the positron forms a bound state with the helium atom in its lowest triplet state [i.e., in the $2\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{3}S\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}(L=0)$ state]. A number of bound-state properties of this system have been determined for the ${e}^{+}[\mathrm{He}(2\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{3}S)]$ ions, where the $^{\ensuremath{\infty}}\mathrm{He}$, $^{4}\mathrm{He}$, and $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ helium nuclei are considered. Some applications related to the positron annihilation in the ${e}^{+}[\mathrm{He}(2\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{3}S)]$ ion are also discussed.
