Persistent infrared spectral hole burning of Tb^3+ in the glasslike mixed crystal Ba_1−x_−yLaxTbyF_2+x_+y

S. P. Love, J. A. Campbell, Carl E. Mungan +1 more

Persistent IR spectral holes that exhibit glasslike characteristics—highly nonexponential low-temperature relaxation behavior and a broad distribution of barrier heights observable in thermal-cycling studies—have been produced in the inhomogeneously broadened 4.5-μm 7F6 → 7F5 electronic absorption band of the Tb3+ ion in the mixed crystal Ba1−x−yLaxTbyF2+x+y. Investigations of six compositions, ranging from x = 0, y = 0.005 to x = 0.30, y = 0.05, reveal no hole burning for the x = 0, y = 0.005 case and a hole-burning quantum efficiency of the order of 5 × 10−7 with a weak dependence of the lanthanide fraction for x + y ≥ 0.05. For all compositions with x + y ≥ 0.05 hole behavior is virtually identical, with both the widths and the peak positions of the distributions of relaxation rates and barrier heights for these mixed crystals being typical of those found for glasses.

Spectral hole-burning of Eu3+: Y2SiO5 crystal at 579.62 mm

Xue Sl, Chen Lb, Yy Zhao +3 more

By using an Ar+ ion laser, a tunable Rh 6G dye laser(Linewidth : 0.5 cm(-1)) and a Coherent 899-21 dye laser as light sources and using a monochromator and a phase-locking amplifier, the optical properties of Eu3+ : Y2SiO5 crystal were detected. Persistent spectral hole burning (PSHB) were also observed in (5)Do-(7)Fo transition in the crystal at the temperature of 16 K. For 15 mW dye laser (Wavelength : 579.62 nm) burning the crystal for 0.1 s a spectral hole with about 80 MHz hole width were detected and the hole can been keep for longer than 10 h.

Spectral Hole-Burning of Eu 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 Crystal at 16 K

Xue Shao-Lin, Muhuo Yu, Lingbing Chen +4 more

By using an Ar + ion laser, a tunable Rh 6 G dye laser (linewidth 0.5 cm −1 ) pumped by the second harmonic of a YAG:Nd laser and a Coherent 899-21 dye laser as light sources and using a monochromator, a phase-locking amplifier and a computer as the data detecting system, we detect the optical properties of Eu 3+ -doped Y 2 SiO 5 crystal. Persistent spectral hole burning (PSHB) are observed in the Eu 3+ ions spectral lines ( 5 D 0 − 7 F 0 transition) in the crystal at the temperature of 16 K. For 15 mW dye laser burning the crystal for 0.1 s spectral holes with hole width about 80 MHz both at 579.62 nm and at 579.82 nm are detected and the holes can remain for a long time, more than 10 h.
