Optimal Measurement and Control in Quantum Dynamical Systems

Abstract

A Markovian model for a quantum automata, i.e. an open quantum dynamical system with input and output channels and a feedback is described. A multi-stage version of the theory of quantum measurement and statistical decisions applied to the optimal control problem for quantum dynamical discrete-time objects is developed. Quantum analogies of Stratonovich non-stationary ltering and Bellman quantum dynamical programming for the time being discrete are obtained. The Gaussian case of quantum one-dimensional linear Markovian dynamical system with a quantum linear transmission line is studied. The optimal quantum multi-stage decision rule consisting of the classical linear optimal control strategy and quantum optimal ltering procedure is found. The latter contains the optimal quantum coherent measurement on the output of the line and the recursive processing by Kalman{Busy lter. All the results are illustrated by an example of the optimal control problem for a quantum open oscillator at the input of a quantum wave transmission line.

On the duality of quantum filtering and optimal feedback control in quantum open linear dynamical systems

Simon Edwards, V. P. Belavkin

The multi-dimensional quality open linear dynamical system with observation and feedback along a quantum linear transmission line is studied in discrete time. The linear least squares filtering and optimal control strategies are obtained as quantum analogies of the Kalman filter and Bellman dynamical programming. The duality of quantum filtering and optimal feedback control is observed for this particular case.

Optimal control of non-Markovian open quantum systems via feedback

Zairong Xi, Wei Cui, Yu Pan

The problem of optimal control of non-Markovian open quantum system via weak measurement is presented. Based on the non-Markovian master equation, we evaluate exactly the non-Markovian effect on the dynamics of the system of interest interacting with a dissipative reservoir. We find that the non-Markovian reservoir has dual effects on the system: dissipation and backaction. The dissipation exhausts the coherence of the quantum system, whereas the backaction revives it. Moreover, we design the control Hamiltonian with the control laws attained by the stochastic optimal control and the corresponding optimal principle. At last, we considered the exact decoherence dynamics of a qubit in a dissipative reservoir composed of harmonic oscillators, and demonstrated the effectiveness of our optimal control strategy. Simulation results showed that the coherence will completely lost in the absence of control neither in non-Markovian nor Markovian system. However, the optimal feedback control steers it to a stationary stochastic process which fluctuates around the target. In this case the decoherence can be controlled effectively, which indicates that the engineered artificial reservoirs with optimal feedback control may be designed to protect the quantum coherence in quantum information and quantum computation.

Optimal Unravellings for Feedback Control in Linear Quantum Systems

Howard M. Wiseman, Andrew C. Doherty

For quantum systems with linear dynamics in phase space much of classical feedback control theory applies. However, there are some questions that are sensible only for the quantum case: Given a fixed interaction between the system and the environment what is the optimal measurement on the environment for a particular control problem? We show that for a broad class of optimal (state-based) control problems (the stationary linear-quadratic-Gaussian class), this question is a semidefinite program. Moreover, the answer also applies to Markovian (current-based) feedback.

Adaptive measurement filter: efficient strategy for optimal estimation of quantum Markov chains

Alfred Godley, Mădălin Guţǎ

Continuous-time measurements are instrumental for a multitude of tasks in quantum engineering and quantum control, including the estimation of dynamical parameters of open quantum systems monitored through the environment. However, such measurements do not extract the maximum amount of information available in the output state, so finding alternative optimal measurement strategies is a major open problem. In this paper we solve this problem in the setting of discrete-time input-output quantum Markov chains. We present an efficient algorithm for optimal estimation of one-dimensional dynamical parameters which consists of an iterative procedure for updating a `measurement filter' operator and determining successive measurement bases for the output units. A key ingredient of the scheme is the use of a coherent quantum absorber as a way to post-process the output after the interaction with the system. This is designed adaptively such that the joint system and absorber stationary state is pure at a reference parameter value. The scheme offers an exciting prospect for optimal continuous-time adaptive measurements, but more work is needed to find realistic practical implementations.

Towards the theory of control in observable quantum systems

V. P. Belavkin

An operational description of the controlled Markov dynamics of quantum-mechanical system is introduced. The feedback control strategies with regard to the dynamical reduction of quantum states in the course of quantum real-time measurements are discribed in terms of quantum filtering of these states. The concept of sufficient coordinates for the description of the a posteriori quantum states from a given class is introduced, and it is proved that they form a classical Markov process with values in either state operators or state vector space. The general problem of optimal control of a quantum-mechanical system is discussed and the corresponding Bellman equation in the space of sufficient coordinates is derived. The results are illustrated in the example of control of the semigroup dynamics of a quantum system that is instantaneously observed at discrete times and evolves between measurement times according to the Schroedinger equation.

Continuous Non-Demolition Observation, Quantum Filtering and Optimal Estimation

Belavkin, V P

A quantum stochastic model for an open dynamical system (quantum receiver) and output multi-channel of observation with an additive nonvacuum quantum noise is given. A quantum stochastic Master equation for the corresponding instrument is derived and quantum stochastic filtering equations both for the Heisenberg operators and the reduced density matrix of the system under the nondemolition observation are found. Thus the dynamical problem of quantum filtering is generalized for a noncommutative output process, and a quantum stochastic model and optimal filtering equation for the dynamical estimation of an input Markovian process is found. The results are illustrated on an example of optimal estimation of an input Gaussian diffusion signal, an unknown gravitational force say in a quantum optical or Weber's antenna for detection and filtering a gravitational waves.
