Abstract

We have investigated atomic coherence effects in the ladder scheme of the triplet transitions 2S-2P-3S of helium. A powerful dressing laser at 706 nm in resonance with the 2P-3S transition induces a transparency on the 2S-2P transition at 1083 nm probed by a weak laser. We have characterised this induced transparency also known as Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT), demonstrating the possibility of reaching 100% of bleaching. Also, we have evidenced the presence of the two photon effect on the EIT process by studying its dependence on the mutual probe-dress polarisation angle. With such a simple level scheme a quantitative comparison with the theory has been made possible and many of the predicted effects have been investigated. Furthermore, polarisation of the dressing laser field has allowed for the first time the study of the electromagnetically induced birefringence which causes a change in the probe laser polarization. The experiments were performed not only in the clean environment of a metastable atomic beam but also in a weak radiofrequency discharge; this configuration could be suggestive for non inverted gain phenomena through incoherent population of excited levels.

Birefringence in electromagnetically induced transparency

(4)He 2 (3)S(1) --> 2 (3)P transitions at 1083 nm were laser probed in the presence of radiation that coupled the 2 (3)P level with the 3 (3)S(1) level in a ladder scheme. The metastable helium that was used was produced in a rf discharge. Significant atomic birefringence was detected, in addition to complete electromagnetically induced transparency. A simple theoretical model explains the experimental results.

Coherent control of the polarization of optical pulses using electromagnetically induced transparency

Daisuke Fujishima, Masahiro Takeoka, Fumihiko Kannari

Summary form only given. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) refers to a phenomenon, whereby the optically resonant transition is rendered nearly transparent by applying a strong coupling laser field. The mechanism of EIT is usually explained in terms of quantum coherence or quantum interference. This EIT has attracted increasing interest because absorption associated with nonlinear optical processes can be removed. In the typical three-level /spl lambda/-system, which includes the ground state and the metastable state, when the atomic population is prepared in the superposition of the states by the coupling fields, the optical response of the media to the probe field is significantly modified. Since this is a coherent control of an electric field by another field via the atomic coherence, several schemes to control light coherently have been suggested. We propose an optical coherent control scheme of the polarization of optical pulses using the EIT quantum coherence, and numerically study its applicability to fast optical switching.

Study of coherence effects in an inverted Y-type four-level system

Xiaoli Li, Yafang Shi, Lin Liu +6 more

Atomic coherence and interference play an important role in the study of the atom-photon interactions. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is an extensively studied two-photon coherence phenomenon theoretically as well as experimentally. EIT is mainly observed in three-level atomic systems which causes transparency by quenching absorption of the medium. In this paper, based on the lambda type three-level system including energy level |1>, |2> and |3>, a microwave driving field is introduced between the excited-state energy level |3> and another excited-state energy level |4> to form an inverted Y-type four-level system. We theoretically study the two- and three-photon coherence in this system. The results show that the coupling field makes the probing absorption intensity at the resonant frequency have a very narrow line-width depression, i.e., EIT. The microwave field causes a dynamic Stark splitting of the energy level |3> and induces the Aulter-Townes double peaks. Their frequency interval is exactly equal to the Rabi frequency of the microwave field. The presence of all three fields induces wide window of EIT at the line center owing to the enhanced depression results. The transient evolution is also discussed to understand the optical switching process in the system. Our theoretical study will be helpful to get a deeper insight into the three-photon effects in multilevel systems.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in Λ-Type Zeeman Sublevels of Cesium Atoms

Tiancai Zhang

Employing two lasers as the coupling and probe fields which have opposite circular polarization (σ + and σ -), electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in Λ-type Zeeman sublevels of cesium 6 2S 1/2F=3-6 2P 3/2F′=2 degenerate two-level system has been demonstrated via probe absorption spectra. The effect of the intensity and detuning of different coupling. Laser on EII was also investigated in experiments. Within the Doppler background, optical pumping among Zeeman sub-levels and the population of different Zeeman sub-levels can dominate the intensity of EIT effect. And the physical reason of the rugged spectra are presented qualitatively.

Electromagnetically induced transparency versus nonlinear Faraday effect: Coherent control of light-beam polarization

Rafael Drampyan, Szymon Pustelny, Wojciech Gawlik

We report on experimental and theoretical study of the nonlinear Faraday effect under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency at the $5{S}_{1/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5{P}_{3/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5{D}_{5/2}$ two-photon transition in rubidium vapor. These transitions realize the inverted $Y$ model which combines the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ and ladder systems. Strong nonlinearity allowing for large rotation angles of a probe beam tuned to the $S\ensuremath{\rightarrow}P$ transition was obtained by creation of quantum superpositions of magnetic sublevels (Zeeman coherences) in the rubidium ground state ($\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ scheme). Additionally, electromagnetically induced transparency was accomplished in a ladder scheme by acting with a second strong coupling laser on the $P\ensuremath{\rightarrow}D$ transition. Under conditions of a two-photon resonance the rotation was significantly reduced, which is interpreted as a competition between the coherent processes. The effect was observed in sub-Gauss magnetic fields and could be used for efficient coherent control of generation of the ground-state coherences, e.g., for controlling the polarization state of the probe light.

Investigation of Transient Properties of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency with a Strong Probe Laser

Xihua Yang, Zhenrong Sun, Li Hua +2 more

The transient properties of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) are studied with different probe pulse energies for the first time in the 3S 3P 3/2 4D ladder type three level system of sodium atom. The EIT effect would be reduced with the increase of the probe pulse energy. Theoretical calculation is carried out by solving the time dependent matrix equation. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical calculation.
