Abstract

In this work, a method to implement the pushing gate and the fast gates based on laser pulses is shown. An alternative and more general model of fast gate based on continuous off-resonant lasers is proposed. As further applications, a way to induce collective and nearest neighbor lasing interactions, and use them to produce squeezing, and generate cluster and GHz states of up to 30 atoms of the order of a period of the trap is demonstrated.

Coherent control of trapped ions using off-resonant lasers

Juan José García‐Ripoll, P. Zoller, J. I. Cirac

In this paper we develop a unified framework to study the coherent control of trapped ions subject to state-dependent forces. Taking different limits in our theory, we can reproduce previous designs of quantum gates and propose a different design of fast gates based on continuous laser beams. We demonstrate how to simulate Ising Hamiltonians in a many ions setup, and how to create highly entangled states and induce squeezing. Finally, in a detailed analysis we identify the physical limits of this technique and study the dependence of errors on the temperature.

Motional Quantum-State Engineering and Implementation of a Quantum Phase-Gate for Multiple Trapped Ions

Wen‐Xing Yang

We propose a scheme to generate a superposition of motional coherent states with arbitrary coefficients on a line in phase space and implement a quantum controlled phase-gate for multiple trapped ions with a single standing-wave laser pulse whose carrier frequency is tuned to the ions transition. In the scheme each ion does not need to be exactly positioned at the node of the standing wave, which is very important from viewpoint of experiment. Furthermore, our scheme may allow the generation of a superposition of coherent states with large mean phonon number for a large number of trapped ions in a fast way by choosing suitable laser intensity. We show that it can also be used to generate maximally entangled states of multiple trapped ions.

A fast scheme for the implementation of the quantum Rabi model with trapped ions

H. M. Moya-Cessa

We show how to produce a fast quantum Rabi model with trapped ions. Its importance resides not only in the acceleration of the phenomena that may be achieved with these systems, from quantum gates to the generation of nonclassical states of the vibrational motion of the ion, but also in reducing unwanted effects such as the decay of coherences that may appear in such systems.

Generation of Quantum Phase Gates via an Unconventional Geometric Phase Shift in an Ion-Trap System

Ying-Qiao Zhang, Jin Xing-Ri, Shou Zhang +1 more

We propose a scheme to generate a quantum phase gate via an unconventional geometric phase shift in an ion-trap system.Since the gate time is only related to the frequency of the vibrational mode, the present scheme, based on the resonant interaction of the trapped ions with a standing-wave laser beam, requires a much shorter gate time than the scheme based on the resonant interaction of the atoms and the cavity. Also the heating effect of the vibrational mode is negligible under certain conditions.

State-dependent motional squeezing of a trapped ion: Proposed method and applications

Martín Drechsler, M. Belén Farías, Nahuel Freitas +2 more

We show that the motion of a cold trapped ion can be squeezed by modulating the intensity of a phase-stable optical lattice placed inside the trap. The method we propose is reversible (unitary) and state selective: it effectively implements a controlled-squeeze gate. This resource could be useful for quantum information processing with continuous variables. We show that the controlled-squeeze gate can prepare coherent superpositions of states which are squeezed along complementary quadratures. Furthermore, we show that these states, which we denote ``$\mathcal{X}$ states,'' exhibit a high sensitivity to small displacements along two complementary quadratures, which makes them useful for quantum metrology.
