Abstract

Summary form only given. We report the observation of steady-state, sub-Doppler light amplification by coherence in Doppler-broadened /spl Lambda/-type Rb atomic systems. Qualitative understanding of the experimental observation can be inferred from a theoretical analysis of a three-level /spl Lambda/-type system including the effect of the Doppler broadening.

Sub-Doppler light amplification in a coherently pumped atomic system

Yifu Zhu, Ji Lin

We report the observation of steady-state amplification of a weak probe laser without population inversion in the bare states in a Doppler-broadened \ensuremath{\Lambda}-type Rb atomic system. The probe amplification was observed with the Rabi frequency of a coupling laser much smaller than the Doppler width and can be viewed as due to the dressed-state inversion. A 10% single-pass amplification of a weak probe laser was obtained, and the measured linewidth of the gain spectral feature approaches the Rb natural linewidth. A theoretical analysis based on a three-level Doppler-broadened \ensuremath{\Lambda} system is presented, and qualitative agreement with the experiment results is achieved. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Sub-Doppler linewidth with electromagnetically induced transparency in rubidium atoms

Yifu Zhu, T. N. Wasserlauf

We report the experimental observation of steady-state electromagnetically induced transparency and sub-Doppler linewidth in a Doppler-broadened \ensuremath{\Lambda}-type Rb atomic system formed on the $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ ${\mathit{D}}_{2}$ transitions. The \ensuremath{\Lambda} system is coupled on one transition by a strong laser and probed on the other transition by a weak laser. The observed sub-Doppler linewidth decreases with the increasing detuning of the strong-coupling laser from the atomic transition frequency and is in good agreement with the theoretical calculations of G. Vemuri, G. S. Agarwal, and B. D. N. Rao [Phys. Rev. A 53, 2842 (1996)]. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in a three-level Λ-type system in rubidium atoms

Yongqing Li, Min Xiao

An electromagnetically induced transparency is observed at one arm of a three-level \ensuremath{\Lambda}-type system in a rubidium D1 line (794.8 nm) with an 85% reduction in absorption, when a pumping field is present at the other arm. This reduction in absorption for the weak probe field is due to the atomic coherence produced by the strong pumping field. This experiment is done in a Rb vapor cell at room temperature with cw diode lasers for both pumping and probe beams in a Doppler-free configuration. A simple theoretical treatment including Doppler broadening is in good qualitative agreement with the experimental measurement.

Coherent laser spectroscopy of rubidium atoms

S. Mitra, Md. Mabud Hossain, Biswajit Ray +3 more

Laser spectroscopy experiments are reported on rubidium atoms by using two or three external cavity diode lasers to study multiple resonance transitions in Λ- and V-type systems as well as on (Λ+V)-type system. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) peaks having sub-natural line-widths are found on the Doppler broadened transmission backgrounds with velocity selective enhanced absorption dips. In the presence of a pump laser, probe spectrum shows enhancement of EIT signal by tuning the control laser frequency when the Λ- and V-type EIT signals are made to overlap. Theoretical analysis is carried out by solving the optical Bloch equations for five-level atomic model under Λ configuration. With the numerically simulated spectra, variation of EIT transmission peak with ground state decay rate and excited state spontaneous decay rate are investigated. Effect of pump Rabi frequency on the transmission peak is also shown.

Observation of Intracavity Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Polariton Resonances in a Doppler-Broadened Medium

Haibin Wu, Julio R. Gea-Banacloche, Min Xiao

The transmission spectrum of three-level atoms in a vapor cell inside an optical cavity shows distinct peaks associated with atom-cavity polaritons in the system. We develop the theory of these resonances in a Doppler-broadened medium and present the results of experimental observations of these spectra in three-level Lambda-type rubidium atoms inside an optical ring cavity.

Quantum state manipulation via Raman coherence

Yong-qing Li, Changan Xie

Summary form only given. The study on the interaction between electromagnetic fields and multi-level atoms or molecules has discovered many interesting effects including electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) enhanced dispersion with reduced absorption, and lasing without inversion. Recent interests include ultraslow group velocity of light, and superluminal light propagation. Atomic coherence created between different atomic levels plays an essential rule in these experiments. On the other hand, quantum features in the interaction between electromagnetic fields and three-level systems based on atomic coherence have attracted extensive theoretical interests. These include generation of amplitude-squeezed and quantum noise-correlated states of light with EIT, entanglement of atomic states with light fields, and quantum memory for light. According to these theoretical works, manipulation of quantum states of either light fields or atoms via atomic coherence is possible. We study quantum state manipulation of light via coherently driven Raman coherence in a /spl Lambda/-type three-level system of rubidium vapor under far off one-photon resonance condition both theoretically and experimentally.
