Abstract

Summary form only given. It was shown recently that in the double-/spl Lambda/ scheme both cw and self-pulsing regimes can occur, and it is possible to move from one to another regime just by changing the intensity of the driving field or Q factor of the cavity. Although convincing lasing without inversion (LWI) was not achieved, lasing was realized essentially below the conventional threshold and inversionless gain was obtained. It is known that in general two different mechanisms of LWI appear and interfere each other in this scheme. The first mechanism is based on the phenomenon of the coherent population trapping and is connected to an excitation of the low-frequency coherence between two levels of the ground atomic state by bichromatic driving field. The second mechanism represents itself as a kind of resonant anti-Stokes Raman scattering of the driving-field into the lasing field and is associated with the low-frequency coherence induced between two levels of the excited atomic state. The main goal of this paper is to study the role, contribution, and interplay of these two mechanisms into the dynamical behavior of LWI. We study it both analytically and numerically on the basis of the corresponding set of the Maxwell-Bloch equations in the case of resonant driving.

Self-pulsing lasing without inversion in the double- scheme

R. Corbalán, J. Mompart, Ramon A. Vilaseca +1 more

Lasing without inversion (LWI) is investigated from a nonlinear dynamics point of view for an atomic system with three coupled J = 0-1 transitions. The driving and generated fields couple two of these transitions defining a double- scheme. In addition, two incoherent pump fields are acting on the system. We find that LWI can occur not only in a continuous wave regime but also in a self-pulsing regime. A clear physical interpretation of the origin of this self-pulsing LWI is given. We obtain analytically the threshold driving field intensity needed to achieve both continuous wave and self-pulsing LWI emission. For large enough cavity losses, the system can reach either continuous wave or self-pulsing regimes by only changing the driving field intensity.

Lasing without Inversion: Counterintuitive Population Dynamics in the Transient Regime

S. Ya. Kilin, Kishore T. Kapale, Marlan O. Scully

We explore a three-level Lambda scheme to demonstrate that the phenomenon of lasing without inversion (LWI) can be observed in the transient regime. We demonstrate that the pure LWI contribution to the gain of a probe field is distinct from both the resonant absorption (or gain) and the coherent Raman gain (or absorption) by choosing specific initial populations in the dressed-state basis. The suppression of the non-LWI (resonant and Raman) processes is followed by the "rich get richer" (capitalistic) effect for the ground-state population dynamics: Initially, the more populated ground state becomes even more populated. The conditions for the observation of the effect are specified.

Lasing without inversion in three-level systems without external coherent driving

V. Ahufinger, J. Mompart, R. Corbalán

Summary form only given. We study a model for an incoherently pumped laser operating with a Doppler-broadened three-level system placed in a doubly resonant cavity and producing two laser fields, one of them without population inversion. Each laser field couples to only one of the transitions of the three-level medium. We have studied our model for parameters appropriate to two real atomic systems (i) a cascade scheme in atomic /sup 138/Ba looking for lasing with (without) inversion at /spl lambda//sub /spl beta//=554 nm (/spl lambda//sub /spl alpha//=821 nm), and (ii) a V-scheme in atomic /sup 85/Rb with ordinary lasing at /spl lambda//sub /spl alpha//=780 nm and lasing without inversion (LWI) at /spl lambda//sub /spl alpha//=4216 nm. These two cases are qualitatively different in that two-photon processes are responsible for inversionless gain in case (i) while LWI in case (ii) arises from one-photon processes. Moreover, the frequency up-conversion ratio is R=0.67 for the case of /sup 138/Ba and it is R=1.88 for the case of /sup 85/Rb. In spite of the fact that the frequencies of the two laser fields are relatively different, our results show that dual-wavelength lasing extends up to Doppler broadening values typical for optical transitions of atoms in a vapor cell. In case (i) /spl alpha/-lasing occurs without two-photon inversion only for approximately the lower half of the domain of Doppler-broadening values. However, in case (ii) one has LWI in all the domains. Some considerations for a practical realization of the dual-wavelength inversionless-conventional laser are discussed.

Lasing without inversion in three-level systems : self-pulsing in the cascade schemes

J. Mompart, C. Peters, R. Corbalán +1 more

Lasing without inversion (LWI) in specific models of closed three-level systems is analyzed in terms of nonlinear dynamics. From a linear stability analysis of the trivial nonlasing solution of the homogeneously broadened systems with on-resonance driving and laser fields, we find that, near lasing threshold, resonant closed Λ and V schemes yield continuous-wave LWI while resonant cascade schemes can give rise to self-pulsing LWI. The origin of this different behavior is discussed. For parameters of a real cascade system in atomic 138Ba we check numerically that the self-pulsing solution is stable in a broad range of nonzero detunings. It is shown that the self-pulsing emission can still be observed when the typical residual Doppler broadening of an atomic beam is taken into account.

Study on an open four-level inversionless lasing system driven by two intense fields

Pei‐ji Wang

Theoretical model of an open four-level atomic system driven by two fields was presented. The density matrix equations of motion were obtained by the electric dipole and the rotating wave approximations. Under resonance of corresponding fields, the physical mechanism of lasing without inversion (LWI) was discussed and its linear analytical solution was obtained. By numerical results, we studied the effects of the spontaneous decay rates between atomic levels, incoherent pump rate, the injection rates, and the exit rate on the gain without inversion and the population difference of the system. The difference between the linear and nonlinear gain and the population difference of the system were discussed. A LWI gain was got during the region of the spontaneous decay rates between atomic levels. The LWI gain can obtain by adjusting suitably incoherent pump rate, the atomic injection ratio and the exit rate. The curves of the linear gain and the nonlinear gain were similar with the Rabi frequencies of the driving fields. The curves of the linear population difference and the nonlinear population difference were similar too. The linear stable value of the gain was larger than the nonlinear stable value of the gain.

Theory of lasing without population inversion

Heide Doss, Lorenzo M. Narducci

This thesis is concerned with the amplification of coherent radiation from an active medium under conditions which require no population inversion between the energy levels. Gain without population inversion may be obtained by creating a sufficiently strong correlation between pairs of atomic states, usually with the help of external sources of resonant electromagnetic radiation. Our main objective is to investigate two possible selections for the active medium: a three level atom in a lambda configuration and a Raman-driven four level model. For both we identify the conditions that lead to inversionless laser action, we calculate the small signal gain and investigate the physical mechanisms which are responsible for the emergence of gain. While the ultimate cause of the gain is quantum interference, we propose attractive alternative pictures based on the dressed states of the coupled atom-driving field systems. We address the important practical issue of the effect of atomic motion and related Doppler broadening on the inversionless gain profile and we also analyze the transient response of each laser model with the help of the appropriate Maxwell-Bloch equations. Finally we develop a fully quantum mechanical description of the lambda model and find that the radiated field can display unique quantum features which manifest themselves with sub-Poissonian photon fluctuations.
