Single Photon Detection at Telecommunication Wavelengths with Commercially Available InGaAs/InP APDs

Songhao Liu

The upsurge of interest in quantum key distribution(QKD) in recent years has motivated an extensive effort aiming at developing single-photon detectors(SPDs) at telecommunication wavelengths. A brief review is given of the major technologies for the SPDs, including temperature control and Geiger mode operation especially the gated mode operation, and the methods to choose from commercially available InGaAs/InP APDs for the SPDs are discussed.

Single photon counting at telecom wavelength and quantum key distribution

Alexei S. Trifonov, Darius Subacius, Audrius Berzanskis +1 more

A brief overview is given of single photon detector performance requirements for quantum cryptography applications. The analysis is made with respect to restrictions necessary to secure the quantum key distribution channel. InGaAs/InP avalanche photodiode performance is analysed for single photon counting at 1550 nm. Quantum efficiency, dark current and afterpulsing probability (for times up to 100μs after an initial avalanche) are studied in a wider temperature range than previously reported (0deg; C to –80deg;C). We show that photon counting is a bottle-neck in current quantum key distribution systems and provides the source for future performance improvement.

Novel single-photon detectors based on NbN superconducting nanostructures promise orders-of-magnitude improvement over InGaAs APDs. We demonstrate this improved performance for the first time by measuring the g(2)(τ) on single photon states produced by a quantum dot at telecom wavelength.

Using InP/InGaAs avalanche photodiodes for 1.3 um photon detection

A. A. Anisimov, Andrei V. Medvedev, Sergey I. Markov

InGaAs/InP avalanche photodiode in photon detection mode was researched. The automatic experimental setup was developed. The parameters of single photon detector were optimized for quantum cryptography application in temperature range -38...-57C for 1.3 μm wavelength. Quantum efficiency 16% at quantum bit error rate 10% and dark count probability 7 10-5 at -38C was achieved.
