Abstract

The energy of the ground state and the effective mass of the excitations are found for a non-ideal Fermi gas with short-range forces. the radii of action of which are small in comparison with the average wavelength. (auth)

Ground-state pressure of an ideal Fermi gas

A simple relationship between the pressure, internal energy, and Fermi energy of an ideal ultradegenerate Fermi gas is derived in two ways. The conditions for its validity and its use in simplifying calculations are discussed.

EFFECT OF A PERIODIC POTENTIAL ON A DEGENERATE FERMI GAS. Technical Note No. 14

S. A. Moszkowski, L. Wilets

The effect of a periodic potential on the particle and energy density of a degenerate Fermi gas is considered. It was found that for a weak and long wavelength potential the inhomogeneity correction (deviation from the Thomas Fermi statistical model) to the kinetic energy density is only 1/9 as large as the Weizsacker estimate. The potential energy density due to Majorana exchange two-body interactions of short range is also given to a high accuracy by the statistical model; the corrections are only 1/9 as large as for a short range Wigner (ordinary) interaction. For the analogous two dimensional Fermi gas, the inhomogeneity corrections vanish at least to high order unless the periodic potential contains short wavelength components. Relevance to the problem of the nuclear surface is discussed. (auth)

THEORY OF FERMI FLUID

B.T. Geilikman

The ground state energy and other characteristics of a Fermi system are calculated by employing the Green function method and theory of Fermi fluids. The calculations are carried out for long range and short range potential components such that n/sup 1/3/ r/sub s/ > 1 where r/ sub s/ and r/sub l/ are the ranges of action of the short- and long-range force components and n is the particle density.
