Abstract

The ground state energy and other characteristics of a Fermi system are calculated by employing the Green function method and theory of Fermi fluids. The calculations are carried out for long range and short range potential components such that n/sup 1/3/ r/sub s/ > 1 where r/ sub s/ and r/sub l/ are the ranges of action of the short- and long-range force components and n is the particle density. Ground state energy of a hard-sphere Fermi fluid

A new method of computing the ground state energy of a Fermi fluid is developed and applied to the hard-sphere Fermi fluids of two and four components. We find the results to be highly accurate for low densities. In this paper we compute and report the perturbation series for the ground state energy for the soft, repulsive, square-well problem at a number of densities for a four-component Fermi system as well as the ladder approximation energies for a hard-sphere potential at the same densities.

Ground-State Properties of Fermi Gases in the Strongly Interacting Regime

S. Y. Chang, Vijay R. Pandharipande

The ground-state energies and pairing gaps in dilute superfluid Fermi gases have now been calculated with the quantum Monte Carlo method without detailed knowledge of their wave functions. However, such knowledge is essential to predict other properties of these gases such as density matrices and pair distribution functions. We present a new and simple method to optimize the wave functions of quantum fluids using the Green's function Monte Carlo method. It is used to calculate the pair distribution functions and potential energies of Fermi gases over the entire regime from atomic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superfluid to molecular Bose-Einstein condensation, spanned as the interaction strength is varied.

SPECTRUM OF ELEMENTARY EXCITATIONS OF SUPER-FLUID FERMI SYSTEMS

I.I. Krush, Yu.V. Tsekhmistrenko

A number of problems involving the spectrum of elementary excitations of superfluid Fermi systems were studied by the methods of quantum field theory. A system with direct binary interaction is considered at zero and non-zero temperature, as well as an electron-phonon system at absolute zero. On finding Schwinger's equations for oneparticle Greene functions, use was made of the ground state approximation proposed by N. N. Bogoliubov, i.e., a formalism was applied which does not preserve the full number of particles. (auth)

SINGLE PARTICLE EXCITATIONS AND SUPER-FLUIDITY IN SYSTEMS CONSISTING OF FERMI PARTICLES WITH AN ARBITRARY INTERACTION APPLICATION TO THE NUCLEUS

A.B. Migdal

An equation set describtng single particle excitations for excitation energies which are small compared with the chemical potential of the system can be obtained by investigating the analytical properties of the Green's functions and taking into account pair correlation. The equations are valid for an arbitrary interaction law. Equations are derived which describe the excited states of a system with a finite number of particles with an accuracy to terms of the order of N/sup -//sup 1//sup ///sup 3/ It is indicated how the results can be applied to real nuclei.
