Zel'dovich's method of perturbation theory in quantum mechanics

Francisco Antônio Bezerra Coutinho, Yukihisa Nogami, Lauro Tomio

Many years ago Zel'dovich showed how the Lagrange condition in the theory of differential equations can be utilized in the perturbation theory of quantum mechanics. Zel'dovich's method enables us to circumvent the summation over intermediate states. As compared with other similar methods, in particular the logarithmic perturbation expansion method, we emphasize that this relatively unknown method of Zel'dovich has a remarkable advantage in dealing with excited states. That is, the ground and excited states can all be treated in the same way. The nodes of the unperturbed wavefunction do not give rise to any complication.

Time-independent perturbation theory with Lagrange multipliers

Chaehyun Yu, Dong‐Won Jung, U-Rae Kim +1 more

Abstract We derive the formulas for the energy and wavefunction of the time-independent Schrödinger equation with perturbation in a compact form. Unlike the conventional approaches based on Rayleigh–Schrödinger or Brillouin–Wigner perturbation theories, we employ a recently developed approach of matrix-valued Lagrange multipliers that regularizes an eigenproblem. The Lagrange-multiplier regularization makes the characteristic matrix for an eigenproblem invertible. After applying the constraint equation to recover the original equation, we find the solutions of the energy and wavefunction consistent with the conventional approaches. This formalism does not rely on an iterative way and the order-by-order corrections are easily obtained by taking the Taylor expansion. The Lagrange-multiplier regularization formalism for perturbation theory presented in this paper is completely new and can be extended to the degenerate perturbation theory in a straightforward manner. We expect that this new formalism is also pedagogically useful to give insights on the perturbation theory in quantum mechanics.

Performance optimization of a finite-time quantum tricycle

Jingyi Chen, Shihao Xia, Jincan Chen +1 more

We establish a finite-time external field-driven quantum tricycle model. Within the framework of slow driving perturbation, the perturbation expansion of heat in powers of time can be derived during the heat exchange processes. Employing the method of Lagrange multiplier, we optimize the cooling performance of the tricycle by considering the cooling rate and the figure of merit, which is the product of the coefficient of performance and cooling rate, as objective functions. Our findings reveal the optimal operating region of the tricycle, shedding light on its efficient performance.
