Berry Phase for the Hamiltonian of an so(5) Algebraic Structure

Abstract

The Hamiltonian of an so(5) algebraic structure is constructed by extending an so(3) system to an so(5) dynamical system. We exactly solve the Hamiltonian by using the coherent state operator of the so(5) algebra. It is shown that the eigenstates corresponding to the same eigenvalue are multi-fold degenerate. The Berry connection associated with the so(5) coherent states is calculated and is found to be decomposed into Abelian and non-Abelian Berry connections. Based on the above theory, the Berry connections of the p-wave superconductivity model are determined explicitly.

VECTOR COHERENT STATES AND NON-ABELIAN GAUGE STRUCTURES IN QUANTUM MECHANICS

G. Giavarini, E. Onofri

We set the general formalism for calculating Berry's phase in quantum systems with Hamiltonian belonging to the algebra of a semisimple Lie group of any rank in the framework of generalized coherent states. Within this approach the geometric properties of Berry's connection are also studied, both in the Abelian and non-Abelian cases. In particular we call attention to the non-Abelian case where we make use of a vectorial generalization of coherent states. In this respect a thorough and self-contained exposition of the formalism of vector coherent states is given. The specific examples of the groups SU(3) and Sp(2) are worked out in detail.

Berry phases for quadratic spin Hamiltonians taken from atomic and solid state physics: examples of Abelian gauge fields not connected to physical particles

Claude C. Bouchiat

This paper contains an evaluation of the Berry phases associated with the following class of nonlinear spin Hamiltonians : H (B, n ) = γS S · B + γQ((S · n) 2 - S2/3), with B · n = 0. Examples of these Hamiltonians are given in Atomic and Solid State Physics. We compute exactly the Berry phases for S = 1, 3/2 and for S > 3/2, to second order with respect to the ratio γQ/(γS B ). The results involve loop integrals of an Abelian gauge field which can be considered as a generalization of the magnetic monopole field, the projective complex plane P2(C) playing the role of the sphere S2. In the case of the spin-1 the relation between the Aharonov and Anandan cyclic quantum phase and the Berry adiabatic phase is made explicit. The connection between the semiclassical limit of the Berry phase and the classical adiabatic Hannay angle is analyzed using the classical spin model recently proposed by Nielsen and Rohrlich.

Certain properties of Berry's phases in supersymmetric quantum mechanics. II

K M Cheng, P. C. W. Fung

For pt.I see ibid., vol.25, p.1745 (1992). In the first paper the authors studied certain crucial mathematical properties of Abelian Berry's phases in two quantum systems with supersymmetrically related Hamiltonians. They follow up such investigation by extending their analysis to nonAbelian Berry's phases in this present study. They present the derivation of an explicit expression for the difference in the relevant nonAbelian Berry's connections. Also they have derived an expression for a connection one form, which contain the non-Abelian Berry's connection, and which is invariant in the two supersymmetrically related quantum systems. To illustrate their findings mentioned above, they take the example of a Hamiltonian expressible in spin quadrupole. In this example, with a particular choice of supersymmetric partner, they show that the two Berry's connection one forms of the two supersymmetrically related systems may be related by gauge transformation.

Geometric phases of two- and three-level atomic systems related to group theory

Y. Ben-Aryeh

The Hamiltonians of two- and three-level atomic systems interacting with nearly resonant electro-magnetic fields are described. The geometric phase related to the σ z operator of a two-level system is analysed and it is shown that this phase is well defined also for an open circuit. For a closed circuit this phase becomes equivalent to twice the Berry phase. For three-level atomic system the eigenenergies of the Hamiltonian are obtained by solving a cubic equation. Simplified forms for these eigenenergies and a condition for degeneracy are obtained. For non-degenerate three-level system geometric phases related to Cartan subalgebra are analysed under the adiabatic approximation and their relations with the three-level Berry phases are clarified. We show how to use the general theory of non-Abelian connections to the Hamiltonian of a three-level atomic system which includes a degeneracy.

Non-Abelian Berry Phase Calculations in the Kitaev Honeycomb Model

Ahmet Tuna Bolukbasi, Jiří Vala

We develop a rigorous and highly accurate technique for calculation of the Berry phase in systems with a quadratic Hamiltonian within the context of the Kitaev honeycomb lattice model. The method is based on the recently found solution of the model which uses the Jordan-Wigner-type fermionization in an exact effective spin-hardcore boson representation. We specifically simulate the braiding of two non-Abelian vortices (anyons) in a four vortex system characterized by a two-fold degenerate ground state. The result of the braiding is the non-Abelian Berry matrix which is in excellent agreement with the predictions of the effective field theory. The most precise results of our simulation are characterized by an error on the order of $10^{-5}$ or lower. We observe exponential decay of the error with the distance between vortices, studied in the range from one to nine plaquettes. We also study its correlation with the involved energy gaps and provide preliminary analysis of the relevant adiabaticity conditions. The work allows to investigate the Berry phase in other lattice models including the Yao-Kivelson model and particularly the square-octagon model. It also opens the possibility of studying the Berry phase under non-adiabatic and other effects which may constitute important sources of errors in topological quantum computation.

Berry’s phase for compact Lie groups

E. Strahov

The methods of Kähler geometry are applied to generalize the results of Berry obtained for SU(2) (namely, the existence of a geometrical part in the adiabatic phase) to any compact Lie group. We obtain explicit expressions for Berry’s geometric phases, Berry’s connections, and Berry’s curvatures in terms of parameters of the corresponding Lie algebra valued Hamiltonian. It is demonstrated that the parameter space of the Hamiltonian in the general theory is essentially a homogeneous Kähler manifold. The fundamental Kähler potentials of this manifold completely determine Berry’s phase. A general approach is exemplified by the Lie algebra Hamiltonians corresponding to SU(2) and SU(3) evolution groups.
