Optical spectroscopy of nP Rydberg states of Rb87 atoms with a 297-nm ultraviolet laser

Bo Li, Meng Li, Xiaojun Jiang +4 more

We report the measurement of the absolute transition frequencies of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms to the $n{P}_{1/2}$ ($n=34--52$) and $n{P}_{3/2}$ ($n=34--90$) Rydberg states by performing single-photon Rydberg excitation spectroscopy in a vapor cell. Rydberg transitions were detected by monitoring the transmission of a 780-nm probe beam. Based on the spectroscopic data, we determined the fine-splitting intervals and oscillator-strength ratios of the $nP$ doublets and also extracted the quantum defects and ionization frequency. These results extend the spectroscopic information of the $nP$ Rydberg series, providing basic knowledge for further applications to Rydberg atoms.

Mechanical Effect of van der Waals Interactions Observed in Real Time in an Ultracold Rydberg Gas

Thomas Amthor, M. Reetz‐Lamour, Sebastian Westermann +2 more

We present time-resolved spectroscopic measurements of Rydberg-Rydberg interactions between two Rydberg atoms in an ultracold gas, revealing the pair dynamics induced by long-range van der Waals interactions between the atoms. By detuning the excitation laser, a specific pair distribution is prepared. Penning ionization on a microsecond time scale serves as a probe for the pair dynamics under the influence of the attractive long-range forces. Comparison with a Monte Carlo model not only explains all spectroscopic features but also gives quantitative information about the interaction potentials. The results imply that the interaction-induced ionization rate can be influenced by the excitation laser. Surprisingly, interaction-induced ionization is also observed for Rydberg states with purely repulsive interactions.

Ionization Spectroscopic Measurement ofnP Rydberg Levels of87Rb Cold Atoms

Yufan Li, Syed Zaheer Ud Din, Dongmei Zhao +2 more

We created an ultracold plasma via the spontaneous ionization of cold dense Rydberg atoms of 87Rb in a magneto-optical trap (MOT), and measured the nS1/2 (n = 50–80), nP1/2 (n = 16–23), nP3/2 (n = 16–98), and nD5/2 (n = 49–96) Rydberg levels by detecting the electrons in the ultracold plasma. By fitting the energy levels of Rydberg states, the first ionization potential of 33690.950(11) cm−1 and the quantum defects of S, P, and D orbitals were obtained. The absolute transition energies of nS1/2 (n = 66–80), nP1/2 (n = 16–23), nP3/2 (n = 16–98), and nD5/2 (n = 58–96) states of 87Rb, as well as the quantum defects for p1/2 and p3/2 series, are given for the first time.
