Abstract

Recently, Holbl et al. proposed an improvement to Peyravian-Jeffries's password-based authentication protocol to overcome some security flaws. However, Munilla et al. showed that Holbl et al.'s improvement is still vulnerable to off-line password guessing attack. In this paper, we provide a secure password-based authentication protocol which gets rid of the security flaws of Holbl et al.'s protocol.

Robust Remote Mutual Authentication Scheme with Key Agreement

Chih-Ho Chou, Kuo‐Yu Tsai, Tzong‐Chen Wu

In 2006, Shieh and Wang proposed a remote mutual authentication and key agreement scheme, in which a user can login to a remote server with his password and smartcard. In Shieh and Wang’s scheme, it requires only hash functions operations during the login and key agreement phase. However, Holbl et al. demonstrated some attacks on Shieh and Wang’s scheme and proposed an improved scheme to overcome the shown attacks in 2010. In this paper, we point out that Holbl et al.’s proposed scheme is still vulnerable to an offline password guessing and forgery attack. In addition, Holbl et al.’s scheme fails to achieve explicit key authentication. We propose a robust remote mutual authentication scheme with key agreement to resist against above mentioned attacks and provide more security requirements.

Analysis and improvements of dynamic identity-based remote user authentication scheme

QU Jua

In this paper, Duan et al.'s scheme is analyzed. It is showed that this scheme is insecure against offline-guessing attack, replay attack, forgery attack and a session key doesn't be provided after mutual authentication. An improved scheme is proposed that overcomes the above-mentioned security flaws with not affecting the merits of the original scheme. The proposed scheme not only allows the users to choose and change their passwords freely, but also generates a session key agreed by the user and the server.

Secure Remote User Authentication Protocol against Privileged-Insider Attack

SungYup Lee, Yohan Park, Youngho Park

Recently, Due to the rapid development of the internet and IT technology, users can conveniently use various services provided by the server anytime and anywhere. However, these technologies are exposed to various security threat such as tampering, eavesdropping, and exposing of user's identity and location information. In 2016, Nikooghadam et al. proposed a lightweight authentication and key agreement protocol preserving user anonymity. This paper overcomes the vulnerability of Nikooghadam's authentication protocol proposed recently. This paper suggests an enhanced remote user authentication protocol that protects user's password and provides perfect forward secrecy.

Cryptanalysis and Security Enhancement of an Efficient and Secure Dynamic ID Based Remote User Authentication Scheme for Multi-Server Environments

Subhasish Banerjee, Manash Pratim Dutta, Chandan Tilak Bhunia

Password based authentication schemes have been widely used to verify the legitimacy of a user over an insecure communication channel. A common feature among most of the published schemes is that user's identity (ID) is static in all the transaction sessions, which may leak some information about the user and can create risk of identity theft during message transaction. Therefore, to provide user anonymity, many dynamic ID based remote users authentication schemes have been proposed. Recently, Khan et al. proposed an efficient and secure dynamic ID based remote user authentication scheme and claimed that their scheme can provide strong security against various attacks. In this paper, we have demonstrated that Khan et al.'s scheme is vulnerable to server spoofing attack and insider attack, and has some flaws in login and authentication phase as well and also proposed an enhanced scheme to overcome the identified weaknesses.

Attacks on Young-Hwa An’s Improved Dynamic ID-Based Remote User Authentication Scheme

Cheng Qiang Xu, Zhen Li Zhang

In 2011, Khan et al. analyzed and improved an enhanced secure dynamic ID-based remote user authentication scheme to overcome the weakness of Wang et al.’s scheme. In 2013, Young-Hwa An showed that Khan et al.’s scheme is not secure because Khan et al.’s scheme can not resist password guessing attack, forgery attack and does not provide user anonymity. After that he proposed a security improvement of dynamic ID-based remote user authentication scheme with session key agreement to remedy the weakness in Khan et al.’s scheme. Recently, through our study, we have found that Young-Hwa An’s mechanism is not secure enough. There still exists insider user’s attack, anonymity attack and forgery attack.
