Abstract

Evolution of a Bose-condensed gas in one-dimensional optical lattices is investigated in the presence of a potentialbarrier created by a far-off resonant laser beam. After the magnetic trap and optical lattices are switched off,by using the propagator method, the analytical result of the evolution of the density distribution of the Bose-condensed gas is given. In particular, the collision between the condensate and the potential barrier is shown inthis paper.

Evolution and Collision of Bose-Condensed Gases in an Infinitely Deep Square Well

The evolution and collision of Bose-condensed gases in one-dimensional optical lattices are investigated in the presence of an infinitely deep square well created by two far-off resonant laser beams. The two far-off resonant laser beams are superimposed on the combined potential consisting of a magnetic trap and one-dimensional optical lattices. After the combined potential is switched off, the analytical result of the evolution of the density distribution of the Bose-condensed gas is given by using the propagator method. The collisions between the condensate and the infinitely deep square well are shown in the present work.

Density Distribution of Bose-Condensed Gas in a Three-Dimensional Optical Lattice

Xu Zhi-Jun, Cheng Cheng, Xiong Hong-Wei

For the Bose-condensed gas in a magnetic trap and three-dimensional optical lattice, the non-uniform distribution of the atoms in different lattice sites is investigated and a propagator method is used to study the evolution of the interference pattern after the combined potentials are switched off. The analytical result of the wavefunction at any time t is given and especially the motion of the side peaks is described by a simple analytical expression.

SPLITTING AND TRAPPING OF BOSE-CONDENSED GASES IN MULTI-WELLS

For the Bose-condensed gas in a one-dimensional optical lattice, several far-off resonant laser beams are used to split and trap the matter wavepacket after switching off both the magnetic trap and optical lattices. In the presence of two far-off resonant laser beams which are not symmetric about the centre of the matter wavepacket, we propose an experimental scheme to observe the collision between two side peaks after switching off the magnetic trap and optical lattice. We also discuss an experimental scheme to realize a coherent splitting and trapping of the matter wavepacket which has potential application in atom optics.

Based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and by using the effective chemical poten tial,we study the distribution of the Bose-condensed gas in the combined potenti als (magnetic trap and three-dimensional optical lattices). The normalized ground-state wave function is given from the distribution of the Bose-condensed gas.The analytical expression of the density distribution of the Bose-condensed gas is given by using the propagator method when the combined potentials and only the optical lattices are switched off, respectively. When the combined potentials are switched off,the theoretical results of this work agree well with the experiment by Greiner et al.When only the optical lattices are switched off,it is show n that the interference pattern will oscillate in the magnetic trap.In addition, the evolution of the interference pattern is also investigated in the case of an isotropic magnetic trap.
