Coherent four-wave mixing in excited and ionized gas media: four-photon spectrochronography, ellipsometry, and nonlinear-optical imaging of atoms and ions

Aleksei M. Zheltikov, Nikolai I Koroteev

A review of the main directions of development, the most promising new techniques, and urgent applications of coherent four-photon methods of investigation of excited and ionized gas media is presented. It is demonstrated that the methods of coherent four-wave mixing (FWM) provide important spectrochronographic information on atoms and ions, allow selective studies of separate components of nonstationary gas and plasma systems with a complex composition using polarization-sensitive four-photon spectroscopy and coherent ellipsometry, and permit nonlinear-optical imaging of the spatial distribution of atoms and ions in excited gases and plasmas.

Superradiative Decay and Enhanced Optical Nonlinearity of Excitons in Qunatum Wells

E. Hanamura

We evaluate the exciton coherence length and discuss theoretically how it determines its superradiative decay time and its third-order optical nonlinearity in the qunatum wells and microcrystallites.

Fundamental quantum limits in ellipsometry

Łukasz Rudnicki, Luis Lorenzo Sánchez-Soto, Gerd Leuchs +1 more

We establish the ultimate limits that quantum theory imposes on the accuracy attainable in optical ellipsometry. We show that the standard quantum limit, as usually reached when the incident light is in a coherent state, can be surpassed with the use of appropriate squeezed states and, for tailored beams, even pushed to the ultimate Heisenberg limit.
