Abstract

Electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) is obtained in a symmetric U-shaped metamaterial, which is attributed to the simultaneously excited dual modes in a single resonator under lateral incidence.A large group index accompanied with a sharp EIT-like transparency window offers potential applications for slowing down light and sensing.

Polarization-Independent Plasmon-Induced Transparency in a Symmetric Metamaterial

Sang‐Eun Mun, Kyookeun Lee, Hansik Yun +1 more

We propose a novel mechanism for generating electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a symmetric metamaterial. The proposed metamaterial consists of double nanorod pairs, perpendicular to each other in the form of a 2-by-2 matrix. This metamaterial shows a polarization-independent EIT-like effect without breaking its symmetry. Since conventional plasmonic EIT metamaterials induce transparency in the transparent window through the coupling between the localized surface plasmon resonance modes, most of existing structures have asymmetric geometry. This limitation means the EIT-like effect can occur only under a particular linearly polarized incident light. The proposed structure, however, has a simple geometry and polarization independence, so it has the potential to be used in high sensitivity sensors and to slow light in the visible spectral range.

Toroidal electromagnetically induced transparency based meta-surfaces and its applications

Angana Bhattacharya, Rakesh Sarkar, Gagan Kumar

The vigorous research on low-loss photonic devices has brought significance to a new kind of electromagnetic excitation, known as toroidal resonances. Toroidal excitation, possessing high-quality factor and narrow linewidth of the resonances, has found profound applications in metamaterial (MM) devices. By the coupling of toroidal dipolar resonance to traditional electric/magnetic resonances, a metamaterial analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency effect (EIT) has been developed. Toroidal induced EIT has demonstrated intriguing properties including steep linear dispersion in transparency windows, often leading to elevated group refractive index in the material. This review summarizes the brief history and properties of the toroidal resonance, its identification in metamaterials, and their applications. Further, numerous theoretical and experimental demonstrations of single and multiband EIT effects in toroidal-dipole-based metamaterials and its applications are discussed. The study of toroidal-based EIT has numerous potential applications in the development of biomolecular sensing, slow light systems, switches, and refractive index sensing.

Electromagnetically induced transparency with large group index induced by simultaneously exciting the electric and the magnetic resonance

Haiming Li, Shaobin Liu, Siyuan Liu +1 more

In this paper, we numerically and experimentally demonstrate classical analogy of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with simultaneously exciting the electric and the magnetic resonance. The cut wire and the split-ring resonator (SRR) are chosen as the bright and the quasi-dark EIT resonators, respectively. Under incident electromagnetic wave illumination, an EIT-like sharp transmission window can be observed. The group index exceeds 140, which can be applied for slow electromagnetic wave velocity. Furthermore, the underlying physics can be interpreted by the concept of hybridization model. The simultaneous excitation of the electric and the magnetic resonance can make up for the shortcomings of the other existing designs. More importantly, it can enrich metamaterial analogy of electromagnetically induced transparency.

Polarization and incidence insensitive dielectric electromagnetically induced transparency metamaterial

Fuli Zhang, Qian Cheng Zhao, Ji Ping Zhou +1 more

In this manuscript, we demonstrate numerically classical analogy of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with a windmill type metamaterial consisting of two dumbbell dielectric resonator. With proper external excitation, dielectric resonators serve as EIT bright and dark elements via electric and magnetic Mie resonances, respectively. Rigorous numerical analyses reveal that dielectric metamaterial exhibits sharp transparency peak characterized by large group index due to the destructive interference between EIT bright and dark resonators. Furthermore, such EIT transmission behavior keeps stable property with respect to polarization and incidence angles.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in All-Dielectric U-Shaped Silicon Metamaterials

Mengyao Qin, Chengda Pan, Yu Chen +4 more

An analogy of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) based on all-dielectric metamaterial is theoretically demonstrated in this paper. The U-shaped Silicon-based metamaterial unit cell comprises a dipole antenna supported by one horizontal nanoscale bar and a quadrupolar antenna supported by two vertical nanoscale bars. The near-field coupling between the two antennas and the reduction of absorption loss lead to a narrow EIT-like transmission window with a high quality-factor of 130, which exhibits a refractive index sensitivity with a figure-of-merit of 29. The group delay of 0.75 ps and the group index of 2035 are obtained in the transmission window. Due to these unique optical properties, the proposed metamaterial structure can find many applications including slow-light devices, optical sensors, enhancement of non-linear processes, and storage of quantum information.
