Non-Markovian decoherence in donor-based charge quantum bits

Abstract

"The decoherence of a donor-based charge quantum bit is obtained in an analytical way, starting from a physically motivated preparation process that leaves the acoustic phonon bath in a non-thermal state. The non-Markovian decoherence rate varies with time and includes a recoherence at later times. The resulting coherence time is shown to be inversely proportional to temperature."

Analytical model of non-Markovian decoherence in donor-based charge quantum bits

F. Lastra, Sebastián A. Reyes, Sascha Wallentowitz

We develop an analytical model for describing the dynamics of a donor-based charge quantum bit (qubit). As a result, the quantum decoherence of the qubit is analytically obtained and shown to reveal non-Markovian features: The decoherence rate varies with time and even attains negative values, generating a non-exponential decay of the electronic coherence and a later recoherence. The resulting coherence time is inversely proportional to the temperature, thus leading to low decoherence below a material dependent characteristic temperature.

Phonon-induced entanglement dynamics of two donor-based charge quantum bits

F. Lastra, Sebastián A. Reyes, Sascha Wallentowitz

The entanglement dynamics of a pair of donor-based charge qubits is obtained in analytical form. The disentanglement is induced by off resonant scattering of acoustical phonons in the semiconductor host. According to our results a rather unusual recovery of entanglement occurs that depends on the geometrical configuration of the qubits. In addition, for large times a non-vanishing stationary entanglement is predicted. For the cases of one and two initial excitations a simple kinetic interpretation allows for an adequate analysis of the observed dynamics. Our results also reveal a direct relation between the disentanglement rate and the inter-donor decoherence rates.

Phonon decoherence in quantum dot qubits

Eduardo R. Mucciolo, Serguei Vorojtsov, Harold U. Baranger

The spin of an electron confined into a lateral semiconductor quantum dot has been proposed as a possible physical realization of a qubit. While the spin has the advantage of large decoherence times, operations with more than one qubit will necessarily involve orbital degrees of freedom, namely, charge, which is much more prone to decoherence. There are also alternative quantum dot qubit proposals that are entirely based on charge. We have used a realistic model to quantify the limitations imposed by acoustic phonons on the operation of quantum dot-based qubits. Our treatment includes essential aspects of the setup geometry, wave function profile and materials characteristics. The time dependence of the qubit density matrix is the presence of a phonon bath solved within the Born-Markov approximation. We find that the inclusion of geometric form factors makes the phonon-induced decoherence rates in double dot charge qubits nearly one order of magnitude lower than estimates previously in the literature. Moreover, our theoretical prediction for the quality factor of coherent charge oscillations based on phonon decoherence are higher than the values recently observed experimentally. This allows us to conclude that phonons are not the primary source of decoherence in double quantum dot qubits.

A non-Markovian approach to spin-phonon coherence and the breakdown of the Markovian approximation

Mohamed Belhassen, Tim Schröder, Gregor Pieplow

Qubit coherence is an essential figure of merit for quantum information processing applications such as quantum computing, or quantum repeaters. Understanding the coherence properties of the underlying physical qubits that facilitate such applications is therefore are often limited by coupling to lattice phonons, which in turn constrains operation temperature. Here we study phonon induced electronic spin decoherence in group-IV vacancy centers in diamond. We begin by modeling the spin-phonon interaction and then employ the widely used Born-Markov approximation, highlighting its inconsistencies in this setting and its deviations from experimental observations. To close the gap between theoretical predictions and experimental results, we relax certain approximations, investigate their contributions to the predicted coherence times, and identify the dominant sources of discrepancy. We further demonstrate that experimentally measured electronic spin coherence dynamics are consistently captured within a non-Markovian framework, and we show how the magnetic field orientation influences the qubit coherence time.

Non-Markovian qubit dynamics in a thermal field bath: Relaxation, decoherence, and entanglement

Sanjiv Shresta, Charis Anastopoulos, Adrian A. Drǎgulescu +1 more

We study the non-Markovian dynamics of a qubit made up of a two-level atom interacting with an electromagnetic field (EMF) initially at finite temperature. Unlike most earlier studies where the bath is assumed to be fixed, we study the complete evolution of the combined qubit-EMF system, thus allowing for the coherent backaction from the bath on the qubit and the qubit on the bath in a self-consistent manner. In this way we can see the development of quantum correlations and entanglement between the system and its environment, and how that affects the decoherence and relaxation of the system. We find nonexponential decay for both the diagonal and nondiagonal matrix elements of the qubit's reduced density matrix in the pointer basis. The former shows the qubit relaxing to thermal equilibrium with the bath, while the latter shows the decoherence rate beginning at the usually predicted thermal rate, but changing to the zero-temperature value as the qubit and bath become entangled. The decoherence and relaxation rates are comparable, as in the zero-temperature case. On the entanglement of a qubit with the EMF we calculated the fidelity and the von Neumann entropy, which is a measure of the purity of the density matrix. The present more accurate non-Markovian calculations predict lower loss of fidelity and purity as compared with the Markovian results. Generally speaking, with the inclusion of quantum correlations between the qubit and its environment, the non-Markovian processes tend to slow down the drive of the system to equilibrium, prolonging the decoherence and better preserving the fidelity and purity of the system.

Non-Markovian dynamics and phonon decoherence of a double quantum dot charge qubit

Xian-Ting Liang

In this paper we investigate decoherence times of a double quantum dot (DQD) charge qubit due to it coupling with acoustic phonon baths. We individually consider the acoustic piezoelectric as well as deformation coupling phonon baths in the qubit environment. The decoherence times are calculated with two kinds of methods. One of them is based on the qusiadiabatic propagator path integral (QUAPI) and the other is based on Bloch equations, and two kinds of results are compared. It is shown that the theoretical decoherence times of the DQD charge qubit are shorter than the experimental reported results. It implies that the phonon couplings to the qubit play a subordinate role, resulting in the decoherence of the qubit.
