Frequency up-conversion in Lasing Without Inversion

Abstract

Abstract It is well known that in a three-level lambda system, spontaneous emission decay rate on the lasing transition must be smaller than or equal to the decay rate on the driving transition in order to observe LWI. Since spontaneous emission rate is proportional to cube of the corresponding transition frequency, satisfying the above condition requires the frequency of lasing transition to be smaller than the driving transitions frequency. In other words, according to this condition, frequency upconversion is not possible with LWI. The main theme of this article is to suggest the possibilty of frequency upconversion in LWI by overcoming the condition described above.

Gain without inversion in the frequency up-conversion regime

We analyze the general conditions and limitations for the realization of frequency up-conversion via lasing without inversion (LWI). Based on this analysis we propose a class of schemes in which LWI can be achieved via optical- or microwave-frequency driving on a weakly allowed transition. A noninversion amplification process based on this system is studied with particular emphasis on propagation effects and Doppler broadening. Amplification of both monochromatic and bichromatic fields is considered and a possible implementation in realistic atoms and ions is discussed.

Lasing without Inversion in Open Three-level System

Ping‐Xing Chen

The LWI operation condition for an open Λ-type three level atomic system is obtained by solving the steady-state density-matrix equation with the system being driven by a strong coherent field while the inherent pumping rate and decay rate being arbitrary. It is shown that the inversions of inherent pumping rate and spontaneous decay rate replace the inversion of population, and together help to realize lasing without population inversion.Furthermore, the LWI can be realized if just either one of the two inversions is fulfilled.A schrodinger equation of three-level atomic system with appropriate conditions is analytically solved to explain the quantum interference process that leads to LWI.

Lasing without inversion via decay induced coherence

Olga A. Kocharovskaya, Andrey B. Matsko, Yuri V. Rostovtsev +1 more

Summary form only given. All the schemes of lasers without inversion (LWI) which so far have been realized experimentally involve external coherent field driving some auxiliary transition in three- or four-level atomic system. In this paper we prove that steady-state lasing without inversion via decay induced coherence in the closed four level atomic system is possible.

Transient lasing without inversion

Anatoly A. Svidzinsky, Luqi Yuan, Marlan O. Scully

It has been known for two decades that coherence can yield lasing without inversion (LWI), which could be useful for making lasers at shorter wavelength. However, excitation of extreme ultraviolet and x-ray atomic transitions typically requires a plasma medium with rapid collisions, which destroy atomic coherence. Here we demonstrate LWI on a time scale shorter than the decoherence time. We show that in such a regime LWI is possible in a V -scheme with a strong coherent drive on the low-frequency transition and obtain an analytical expression for the gain of the laser pulse at high frequency. We propose an experiment in which such LWI can be realized in He plasma.

Lasing without inversion in three-level systems : self-pulsing in the cascade schemes

J. Mompart, C. Peters, R. Corbalán +1 more

Lasing without inversion (LWI) in specific models of closed three-level systems is analyzed in terms of nonlinear dynamics. From a linear stability analysis of the trivial nonlasing solution of the homogeneously broadened systems with on-resonance driving and laser fields, we find that, near lasing threshold, resonant closed Λ and V schemes yield continuous-wave LWI while resonant cascade schemes can give rise to self-pulsing LWI. The origin of this different behavior is discussed. For parameters of a real cascade system in atomic 138Ba we check numerically that the self-pulsing solution is stable in a broad range of nonzero detunings. It is shown that the self-pulsing emission can still be observed when the typical residual Doppler broadening of an atomic beam is taken into account.
