Abstract

Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage(STIRAP)has been successfully extended to multilevel system.Dur- ing the STIRAP process, the intermediate levels have notable population which is detrimental if these levels could decay to other levels through spontaneous emission. This paper proposes a novel method to reduce the intermediate level population during the STIRAP process.A complete population transfer can be achieved in this modified STIRAP even if the intermediate level decays to other levels.

Population transfer by stimulated Raman scattering with delayed pulses: Analytical results for multilevel systems

George W. Coulston, Klaas Bergmann

Stimulated Raman scattering involving adiabatic passage (STIRAP) is a proven technique for population transfer in three-level systems with strong oscillator strengths. We show that the STIRAP process should also yield high transfer efficiencies when the densities of states near the intermediate and final levels are high, provided certain criteria for the experimentally controllable parameters are met. We also show that high transfer efficiencies may even be possible when the pump and Stokes lasers can access levels outside of the three-level system. The criteria are derived with an approach that emphasizes the adiabatic nature of the transfer process in an eigenvector of the interaction Hamiltonian that resembles a trapped state. The results are compared to density matrix calculations.

Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage with trains of weak pulses*

Ignacio R. Solá, Bo Y. Chang, Svetlana Malinovskaya +2 more

Abstract We consider coherent population transfer in multilevel quantum systems driven by time-delayed pulse trains. We show how to choose the parameters of the trains so that the population dynamics tracks the behavior of a Λ-type three-level system under stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP). Efficient population transfer can be achieved regardless of the order and with or without overlap of the pump and the Stokes sub-pulses of the trains. Generalized STIRAP schemes of population transfer in N -level system with sequential couplings are also examined. The mechanism of the population transfer and the robustness of the proposed schemes are discussed.

Spontaneous emission in stimulated Raman adiabatic passage

Peter A. Ivanov, Nikolay V. Vitanov, Klaas Bergmann

This work explores the effect of spontaneous emission on the population transfer efficiency in stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP). The approach uses adiabatic elimination of weakly coupled density matrix elements in the Liouville equation, from which a very accurate analytic approximation is derived. The loss of population transfer efficiency is found to decrease exponentially with the factor ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{0}^{2}∕\ensuremath{\Gamma}$, where $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$ is the spontaneous emission rate and ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{0}$ is the peak Rabi frequency. The transfer efficiency increases with the pulse delay and reaches a steady value. For large pulse delay and large spontaneous emission rate STIRAP degenerates into optical pumping.

Alternative techniques of population transfer in multilevel systems

We consider a five-level atomic system (M-system) driven by four near-resonant laser pulses and study the possibilities of population transfer via different combinations of Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) and bright-STIRAP (b-STIRAP) processes. We examine these combinations analytically and numerically from the point of view of efficiency of population transfer. It is shown, in particular, that the combination of the processes above enhances the efficiency. Analytical expressions are obtained for the quasienergies of the system in two regimes differing by conditions imposed on resonance detunings. Interaction adiabaticity conditions are analyzed. We also study the necessary successions of turning on and off of pulses which ensure efficient transfer of atomic populations. The obtained analytical results agree well with direct numerical calculations.
