Ground Band and Excited Band of Spin-1 BEC in Cigar Shaped Laser Trap

Pang Wei, Zhibing Li, Bao Cheng-guang

The wavefunctions that conserve the total spin are constructed for the fully condensed states and the states with one particle excited. A set of equations are deduced for the spatial longitudinal wavefunctions and the chemical potentials. These equations are solved numerically for 23 Na and 87 Rb condensates. The deformed trap shows significant effects on the spectrum. This implies that the spin effect of the spinor BEC are more easily detected in an optical trap of larger aspect ratio.

Spatial Chaos of Bose–Einstein Condensates in a Cigar-Shaped Trap

Li Fei, Zhongzhou Ren, Luo Hai-Lu +2 more

The spatial chaos of Bose–Einstein condensates in a cigar-shaped trap is studied. For a system with a steady current, we construct the general solution of the 1st-order equation. From the boundedness condition of the general solution, we obtain the Melnikov function predicting the onset of chaos. The unpredictability of the system's distribution of atom density is also theoretically analyzed. For a 23 Na system meeting the perturbation condition, numerical simulations show the existence of chaos, which is in accordance with our analytical results. Numerical simulations of a 87 Rb system dissatisfying the perturbation condition also demonstrate that there exists chaos in the system. The case without a current is also investigated.

Collective excitations in cigar-shaped spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

Rajat, Arko Roy, Sandeep Gautam

We study theoretically the collective excitations of a spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate with antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions in a cigar-shaped trapping potential at zero and finite temperatures using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation. The collective modes at zero temperature are corroborated by real-time evolution of the ground state subjected to a perturbation suitable to excite a density or a spin mode. We also calculate a few low-lying modes analytically and find very good agreement with the numerical results. We confirm the presence of excitations belonging to two broad categories, namely, density and spin excitations, based on the calculation of dispersion. The degeneracy between a pair of spin modes is broken by the spin-orbit coupling. At finite temperature, spin and density excitations show qualitatively different behavior as a function of temperature.
