Abstract

We study theoretically the collective excitations of a spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate with antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions in a cigar-shaped trapping potential at zero and finite temperatures using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation. The collective modes at zero temperature are corroborated by real-time evolution of the ground state subjected to a perturbation suitable to excite a density or a spin mode. We also calculate a few low-lying modes analytically and find very good agreement with the numerical results. We confirm the presence of excitations belonging to two broad categories, namely, density and spin excitations, based on the calculation of dispersion. The degeneracy between a pair of spin modes is broken by the spin-orbit coupling. At finite temperature, spin and density excitations show qualitatively different behavior as a function of temperature.

Emergence of unstable avoided crossing in the collective excitations of spin-1 spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We present analytical and numerical results on the collective excitation spectrum of quasi-one-dimensional spin-orbit (SO)-coupled spin-1 spinor ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates. The collective excitation spectrum, using Bogoliubov--de Gennes theory, reveals the existence of a diverse range of phases in the SO-coupling and Rabi coupling $({k}_{L}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}})$ planes. Based on the nature of the eigenvalue of the excitation spectrum, we categorize the ${k}_{L}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$ plane into three distinct regions, namely, I, II (IIa and IIb), and III. In region I, a stable mode with phononlike excitations is observed. In region IIa, single- and multiple-band instabilities are noted with a gapped mode, while multiband instability accompanied by a mode corresponding to no gap between low-lying and first-excited states is realized in region IIb, which also provides evidence of unstable avoided crossing between low-lying and first-excited modes, responsible for the ${I}_{o}$ type of oscillatory nonequilibrium dynamical pattern formation. The gap between low-lying and first-excited states increases upon increasing the Rabi coupling and decreases upon increasing the SO coupling. Using eigenvector analysis, we confirm the presence of the spin-dipole mode in the spinlike modes in region II. We corroborate the nature of the collective excitation through real-time dynamical evolution of the ground state perturbed with the quench of the trap using the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii model. This analysis suggests the presence of dynamical instability leading to the disappearance of the zeroth component of the condensate. In region III, mainly encompassing $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}\ensuremath{\sim}0$ and finite ${k}_{L}$, we observe phononlike excitations in both the first-excited and the low-lying state. The eigenvectors in this region reveal alternative in- and out-of-phase behaviors of the spin components. Numerical analysis reveals the presence of a superstripe phase for small Rabi coupling in this region, wherein the eigenvector indicates the presence of more complicated spinlike-density mixed modes.

Collective excitations of Bose-Einstein-condensed gases at finite temperatures

R. J. Dodd, Mark Edwards, Charles W. Clark +1 more

We have applied the Popov version of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) approximation to calculate the finite-temperature excitation spectrum of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms. For lower values of the temperature, we find excellent agreement with recently published experimental data for the JILA time-averaged orbiting potential trap. In contrast to recent comparison of the results of HFB-Popov theory with experimental condensate fractions and specific heats, there is disagreement of the theoretical and recent experimental results near the BEC phase transition temperature.

Quantum phases and the spectrum of collective modes in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate with spin-orbital-angular-momentum coupling

Paramjeet Banger, Rajat Rajat, Arko Roy +1 more

Motivated by recent experiments [Chen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 113204 (2018); Chen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 250401 (2018)], we investigate the low-lying excitation spectrum of the ground-state phases of spin-orbital-angular-momentum-coupled (SOAM-coupled) spin-1 condensates. At vanishing detuning, a ferromagnetic SOAM-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) can have two ground-state phases, namely, coreless and polar-core vortex states, whereas an antiferromagnetic BEC supports only polar-core vortex solution. The angular momentum per particle, longitudinal magnetization, and excitation frequencies display discontinuities across the phase boundary between the coreless vortex and polar-core vortex phases. The low-lying excitation spectrum evaluated by solving the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations is marked by avoided crossings and hence the hybridization of the spin and density channels. The spectrum is further confirmed by the dynamical evolution of the ground state subjected to a perturbation suitable to excite a density or a spin mode and a variational analysis for the density-breathing mode.

Finite-temperature phase diagram and collective modes of coherently coupled Bose mixtures

V. Sunilkumar, Rajat Rajat, Sandeep Gautam +1 more

We investigate the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition in coherently (Rabi) coupled Bose-Einstein condensates at zero and finite temperatures, exploring different routes to the transition by tuning the Rabi coupling or increasing the temperature at a fixed coupling. Using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory within the Popov approximation, we map out the finite-temperature phase diagram of a three-dimensional homogeneous condensate and identify the critical line through the softening of the spin gap. Magnetization and the spin dispersion branch reveal the progressive suppression of the ferromagnetic order with increasing temperature. In quasi-one-dimensional harmonic traps, the transition, driven by Rabi coupling, is inferred through the softening of the spin breathing mode with its minimum shifting to lower coupling values with increasing temperature. Notably, the thermally driven transition causes monotonic hardening of all the spin modes. For both coupling and temperature-driven transition, the hybridized density modes in the ferromagnetic phase acquire more density character while approaching the critical point.

Collective excitations of a dilute Bose gas at finite temperature: time dependent Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov theory

Abdelâali Boudjemâa, Nadia Guebli

Abstract Using the time-dependent Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov approach, where the condensate is coupled with the thermal cloud and the anomalous density, we study the equilibrium and the dynamical properties of three-dimensional quantum-degenerate Bose gas at finite temperature. Effects of the anomalous correlations on the condensed fraction and the critical temperature are discussed. In uniform Bose gas, useful expressions for the Bogoliubov excitations spectrum, the first and second sound, the condensate depletion and the superfluid fraction are derived. Our results are tested by comparing the findings computed by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We present also a systematic investigation of the collective modes of a Bose condensate confined in an external trap. Our predictions are in qualitative agreement with previous experimental and theoretical results. We show in particular that our theory is capable of explaining the so-called anomalous behavior of the m = 0 mode.

Collective excitations of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate at finite temperature

C.-H. Zhang, H. A. Fertig

We compare the collective modes for Bose-condensed systems with two degenerate components with and without intercomponent coherence at finite temperature using the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation. We show that the coupling between the condensate and noncondensate in these two cases results in qualitatively different collective excitation spectra. We show that at zero temperature the single-particle excitations of the incoherent Bose condensate can be probed by intercomponent excitations.
