Generation and Applications of Single Photon States and Entangled Photon States

Abstract

Two quantum interferometry processes with possible significant applications in quantum information technology are presented. A two frequency Mach‐Zehnder interferometer realizes the nonlinear frequency conversion of a single photon qubit. The information‐preserving character of the nonlinear process allows to transfer the coherence of the input to the output state. Furthermore, we describe a novel high brilliance universal source of entangled photon pairs with peculiar spatial characteristics, which allows to generate two particle entangled states, either pure or mixed of any structure. By this source we have synthesized and fully characterized by quantum tomography Werner states and maximally entangled mixed states (MEMS). The non local properties of these states have been tested by Bell measurements.

Single-photon frequency hopping: application to quantum interferometry

A novel Mach-Zehnder interferometer terminated at two different frequencies which realizes for a single photon quantum state (qubit) the nonlinear frequency conversion has been realized. The information-preserving character of the nonlinear process allows to transfer the coherence of the input to the output state. The results of this experiment can have relevant applications in quantum information technology.

Generation and manipulation of entangled photon states by a universal source of entanglement

Marco Barbieri, F. De Martini, G. Di Nepi +1 more

Maximally entangled states, Werner state and maximally entangled mixed states (MEMS) have been created and fully characterized by a novel high brilliance universal source of entangled photon pairs with striking spatial characteristics. Mixed states of any structure, spanning a 2 x 2 Hilbert space may be created by this source. The non local properties of the generated entanglement have been tested by standard Bell measurements. Tunable Werner states and Maximally Entangled Mixed States (MEMS) have been created by an original patchwork technique and investigated by quantum tomography. The entropic and nonlocal properties of these states have been also undertaken.

Nonlinear interferometer as a resource for maximally entangled photonic states: Application to interferometry

Christopher C. Gerry, Adil Benmoussa, Richard A. Campos

Nonlinear interferometers are Mach-Zehnder interferometers with Kerr media in either one or both arms. We refer to these devices, respectively, as the asymmetric and symmetric nonlinear interferometers. In the asymmetric case, with one input mode in the vacuum, it is possible to generate maximally entangled photonic states or superpositions of such states. We consider the device as a resource of entangled states for applications to Heisenberg-limited interferometry. Interferometry with the maximally entangled states cannot be performed by simply subtracting the output photocounts as in standard interferometry. Instead, one must perform parity measurements on only one of the output beams. We show that the symmetric nonlinear interferometer, with one input mode in the vacuum, may be used to perform such parity measurements. The same device is shown to produce, with an input coherent state and upon projective measurements, even or odd coherent states, examples of the Schr\"odinger-cat states.

Generation and Characterization of Werner States and Maximally Entangled Mixed States by a Universal Source of Entanglement

Marco Barbieri, F. De Martini, G. Di Nepi +1 more

We present a novel technique for generating two-photon polarization mixed states of any structure, which is based on the peculiar spatial characteristics of a high brilliance source of entangled pairs. Werner states and maximally entangled mixed states, two well-known families of mixed states important for quantum information, have been created and fully characterized by this technique. We have also investigated and tested the nonlocal properties of these states.

Generation of (2 × 2) and (4 × 4) two‐photon states with tunable degree of entanglement and mixedness

Marco Barbieri, C. Cinelli, F. De Martini +1 more

Abstract A parametric source of polarization entangled photon pairs with peculiar spatial characteristics allows to generate any kind of bi‐partite entangled states with tunable dgree of entanglement and mixedness. In particular, maximally entangled mixed states (MEMS) have been created in a reliable way by a “patchwork” technique and investigated by quantum tomography. By the same source, momentum‐polarization hyper‐entangled two‐photon states have been synthesized. The quality of the entanglement in the two degrees of freedom has been tested by multimode Hong‐Ou‐Mandel interferometry.

Frequency hopping in quantum interferometry

Paolo Mataloni, Gian Luca Giorgi, F. De Martini

Abstract We have realized the nonlinear frequency conversion of optical quantum superposition states in a new kind of Mach‐Zehnder interferometer which is terminated at two different frequencies. The information‐preserving character of the relevant unitary transformation represented by the nonlinear process has been experimentally demonstrated in the cases of input qubits and ebits. The theoretical expression of the quantum efficiency of the process is compared with the experimental results. Besides its own intrinsic fundamental interest, the new scheme is expected to find important applications in modern quantum information technology.
