Abstract

We report an experimental observation of the optical transparency enhancement resonances in Hanleelectromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) configuration with a microwave field excitation. In this experimental system, a strong control field and a weak probe field form three-level Λ-type configurations of EIT.The fourth level is coupled by an additional microwave field. With the microwave field excitation, the probe field undergoes a process of absorption to transparency when the probe field decreases.Compared with the EIT effect, this result indicates optical transparency enhancement.A simple theoretical model and a numerical simulation are presented to explain the observed experimental results. The applications of these optical features are also discussed.

Control an electromagnetically induced transparence feature with a microwave field

Xiaoli Li, Lianshui Zhang, Lijun Yang +5 more

In this paper we present a theoretical study of the effect of a microwave field on an EIT feature. The EIT feature is associated with the well-known three-level Λ type configuration where a pump and probe laser field couples two separate optical transitions. In addition to these two laser fields, there is a microwave field which drives one of the two lower levels of the Λ type three-level system to another hyperfine level. The EIT feature is studied as a function of microwave field frequency and intensity. Our results show that the presence of a microwave field can dramatically modify the EIT feature. When microwave is resonant with the hyperfine transition, the EIT feature can be split into two EIT features. When it is off resonant with the hyperfine transition, it causes a frequency shift of the EIT feature, reminiscent of the well-known light shift effect.

Multi-window frequency-tunable electromagnetically induced transparency

Yang Li-jun, Lianshui Zhang, Xiaoli Li +5 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance is obtained in a Λ three-level configuration when the coupling field and the probe field satisfy the two-photon resonance condition. When an additional microwave field drives the transition between two low levels of the Λ three-level system the EIT is observed to split into multiple EITs. In this paper we present a theoretical study of this effect. The results show that the EIT resonance can be split into triplet and the spectral positions of EIT windows is determined by the intensity and the frequency of the microwave field. Therefore, a microwave field can be used to open more than one EIT windows and the EIT frequency tuning can be realized by controlling intensity and frequency of the microwave field.

Electromagnetically induced absorption and electromagnetically induced transparency in an optical-radio two-photon coupling configuration

Lianshui Zhang, Xiaoli Li, Wang Jian +5 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance is obtained in a well-studied lambda three level system where an optical coupling field and a probing field interact with two optical transitions. However, both electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) and EIT can be obtained in a modified quasi-lambda four level system consisting of an optical-radio two-photon coupling field and a probing field. By solving the density matrix equation of motion, a physical account of EIA and EIT is given in terms of a dressed state picture. It can be seen that the optical coupling field in this quasi-lambda four level system has a crucial effect on the forming of EIA and EIT. An EIA is observed under a resonant optical coupling and it evolves into an EIT when there is a detuning. Furthermore, the width of EIA or EIT increases as the optical coupling Rabi frequency increases.

We present a study of electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) under the excitation of a 100% amplitude-modulated(AM) coupling field. The EIT feature is associated with a Λ type three-level configuration where a coupling and probe field couples two separate optical transitions and it is well-known that the spectrum of the swept probe field gives a simple single transparency feature induced by the single mode coupling field. It is shown that when a 100% AM coupling field is applied, there is an EIT doublet...

Study of coherence effects in an inverted Y-type four-level system

Xiaoli Li, Yafang Shi, Lin Liu +6 more

Atomic coherence and interference play an important role in the study of the atom-photon interactions. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is an extensively studied two-photon coherence phenomenon theoretically as well as experimentally. EIT is mainly observed in three-level atomic systems which causes transparency by quenching absorption of the medium. In this paper, based on the lambda type three-level system including energy level |1>, |2> and |3>, a microwave driving field is introduced between the excited-state energy level |3> and another excited-state energy level |4> to form an inverted Y-type four-level system. We theoretically study the two- and three-photon coherence in this system. The results show that the coupling field makes the probing absorption intensity at the resonant frequency have a very narrow line-width depression, i.e., EIT. The microwave field causes a dynamic Stark splitting of the energy level |3> and induces the Aulter-Townes double peaks. Their frequency interval is exactly equal to the Rabi frequency of the microwave field. The presence of all three fields induces wide window of EIT at the line center owing to the enhanced depression results. The transient evolution is also discussed to understand the optical switching process in the system. Our theoretical study will be helpful to get a deeper insight into the three-photon effects in multilevel systems.

Observation of the quantum interference phenomenon induced by interacting dark resonances

Ying-Cheng Chen, Yean-an Liao, Hsin‐Ying Chiu +2 more

We report an experimental observation of narrow and high-contrast spectra, which are induced by interacting dark resonances and have been predicted in Phys. Rev. A 60, 3225 (1999). Spectra are measured with cold ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms produced by a magneto-optical trap. In this experimental system, a coupling laser and a weak probe laser form a three-level \ensuremath{\Lambda}-type configuration of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT); a microwave drives a magnetic-dipole transition between the fourth level and the ground state that is coupled with the excited state by the coupling laser. The observed spectral profile of probe absorption exhibits a very sharp peak emerging inside a narrow EIT dip. Such spectral feature provides more opportunities in manipulating atomic-optical response.
