Abstract

Dependence of Resonant Absorption Linewidth on Atomic Vapour Column Thickness for D1 Line of Cs Atoms Confined in Nano-Cell

Armen D. Sargsyan, David G. Sarkisyan, Y. Pashayan-Leroy +3 more

A new nano-cell with smoothly varying longitudinal thickness of the atomic vapour layer L in the range of 350 - 5100 nm allowing to study the resonant absorption of D1 and D2 lines of Cs atoms for thicknesses changing from L = Lambda/2 to L = 6 Lambda with the step of Lambda/2 (Lambda = 852 nm or 894 nm are the resonant laser wavelengths) and for different intensities is developed. It is revealed that for low laser intensities there is narrowing of the resonant absorption spectrum for the thicknesses L = (2n + 1)Lambda/2 (where n is an integer) up to L = 7Lambda /2 and broadening of the spectrum for L = n Lambda. For relatively high laser intensity (>1 mW/cm2), velocity selective optical pumping/saturated resonances of a reduced absorption (with the line-width close to the natural one), and centred on the hyperfine transitions occur when L = n Lambda. The possible application of these resonance peaks is given. The developed theoretical model describes well the experiment.

David G. Sarkisyan, T. Varzhapetyan, Yu. P. Malakyan +2 more

Resonant fluorescence on D/sub 2/ line of Rb atomic vapour confined in a nano-cell with the gap thickness in the range of 50-500 nm and excited by laser diode radiation (/spl lambda/ = 780 nm) has been studied. The fluorescence spectra was detected in perpendicular direction to the laser-radiation direction.

Sub-natural width N-type resonance in cesium atomic vapour: splitting in magnetic fields

Dimitar Slavov, Armen D. Sargsyan, David G. Sarkisyan +4 more

The sub-natural width N -type resonance in a Λ-system, on the D 2 line of Cs atoms is studied for the first time in the presence of a buffer gas (neon) and the radiations of two continuous narrow-band diode lasers. A L = 1 cm long cell is used to investigate the N -type process. The N -type resonance in a magnetic field for 133 Cs atoms is shown to split into seven or eight components, depending on the magnetic field and laser radiation directions. The results obtained indicate that the levels F g = 3, 4 are the initial and final ones in the N -resonance formation. The experimental results with magnetic field agree well with theoretical descriptions.

Dark-state resonances observed on the D2line of potassium

A. Krasteva, S. Gateva, C. Andreeva +6 more

We report the first observation of sub-natural-width dark resonances of enhanced transparency on the D2 line of potassium, contained in an optical cell with reduced (8mm) dimensions and buffered by 30Torr of Ne. The Potassium vapours are irradiated by a frequency modulated DFB diode laser light (with λ = 766.7nm and 2MHz bandwidth), and are placed in orthogonal to the light magnetic field scanned around zero value. Very good signal-to-noise ratio and narrow (∼20kHz) dark resonances are observed and studied in unshielded laboratory environment. The dark resonance formation is related to coherent superposition of the ground-state Zeeman sublevels by respective components of the frequency-modulated light.

Resonance phenomena in saturation of absorption by laser radiation

Vladilen S Letokhov, V. P. Chebotaev

The review deals with resonance phenomena resulting from saturation of low-pressure-gas absorption lines by a coherent optical field, when the spectral lines are inhomogeneously broadened by the Doppler effect. Principal attention is paid to narrow resonances of width much smaller than the Doppler widths, which are produced upon saturation of the absorption by light waves under various experimental conditions (inside and outside the laser resonator, in traveling and standing waves, in spatially separated waves, etc.), owing to different effects (absorption saturation, mode interaction in the laser). Each of the phenomena is considered from both the theoretical and the experimental points of view. The phenomena considered serve as a basis of a new branch of optical spectroscopy, namely nonlinear laser spectroscopy of ultrahigh resolution.
