Abstract

We present a new scheme of laser spectrometer based on an active optical cavity containing saturated absorbing and amplifying media. Such an active cavity may ensure enhancement in the amplitude of nonlinear optical resonances of saturated absorption at least by one order of magnitude as compared with similar passive system. The efficiency of the spectrometer was demonstrated by the observation of saturated absorption resonances in methane at a wavelength of 3.39 /spl mu/m under transit-time conditions. In these conditions, the contribution of fast molecules can be greatly reduced because of a finite interaction time of particles with the radiation field. In our work with a light beam 0.6 cm in diameter, we eliminated the transit-time broadening limit by using optical selection of slow methane molecules with a transverse velocity 20 times less than the mean thermal one, and obtained sub-DoppIer resonances with a homogeneous width less than 5 kHz.

The investigation into the form of nonlinear optical resonances in an active Fabry-Perot interferometer with amplifying and absorbing media saturated by an external laser radiation was performed. Such an active interferometer may ensure an enhancement in the intensity of resonances by one order of magnitude as compared with a similar passive system.

Increase in the amplitude of a saturated absorption resonance in an active interferometer

D.Yu. Primakov, P.V. Pokasov, Sergei N Bagaev

The behaviour of the amplitude of a saturated absorption resonance observed in laser radiation propagated through an active interferometer with nonlinear amplifying and absorbing media is studied experimentally for the first time. Upon variation of the gain in the amplifying medium and preserving a constant saturating field in the interferometer, a nonlinear increase in the amplitude of the saturated absorption resonance was observed. In this case, an increase in the detected signal exceeded an increase in the noise, i.e., the signal-to-noise ratio also increased.

Narrowing of sub-Doppler saturated-absorption resonances in multilayer gas cells

А. Ч. Измайлов

We have studied theoretically nontrivial specific features of sub-Doppler resonances of saturated absorption in a multilayer gas cell with a rarefied gas medium, which is a compact analog of a large number of plane-parallel atomic beams. Spatially separated saturating and probing monochromatic laser beams that co- and counterpropagate (at the same frequency) in this cell have been considered. In this situation, the action of the light radiation of the saturating beam on the probing beam is determined by optically pumped atoms that fly between the beams under conditions that the longitudinal components of their velocities experience selection due to a specific geometry of the multilayer cell. Such a selection leads to a narrowing of the sub-Doppler resonance in the absorption of the probing beam and decreases the difference between the structures of this resonance for the cases of co- and counterpropagation of the saturating radiation. We have found that, in the considered multilayer cell, the effective width of the sub-Doppler resonance can be smaller (by a factor of about 1.5) than the extremely narrow characteristic width of the well-known Lamb dip in spectroscopy of saturated absorption in the standard gas cell. Results of this study can be used in atomic spectroscopy of ultrahigh resolution and for the laser-frequency stabilization.

Observation of the recoil effect in saturated dispersion resonances in methane

В. А. Алексеев, Nikolay G. Basov, M A Gubin +5 more

The results are given of an experimental investigation of the structure of the λ= 3.39 μ methane line by recording saturated dispersion resonances. A method is described for reducing the intensity of the laser field in the absorbing medium to a value of < 10-6 W/cm2 and thus ensuring that the resolving power of the method is determined mainly by the collisional and field broadening of the lines, and exceeds considerably the transit limit. A 2.2 kHz doublet line splitting, resulting from the recoil effect, was recorded using a laser having a 3-cm diameter beam.

Resonance phenomena in saturation of absorption by laser radiation

Vladilen S Letokhov, V. P. Chebotaev

The review deals with resonance phenomena resulting from saturation of low-pressure-gas absorption lines by a coherent optical field, when the spectral lines are inhomogeneously broadened by the Doppler effect. Principal attention is paid to narrow resonances of width much smaller than the Doppler widths, which are produced upon saturation of the absorption by light waves under various experimental conditions (inside and outside the laser resonator, in traveling and standing waves, in spatially separated waves, etc.), owing to different effects (absorption saturation, mode interaction in the laser). Each of the phenomena is considered from both the theoretical and the experimental points of view. The phenomena considered serve as a basis of a new branch of optical spectroscopy, namely nonlinear laser spectroscopy of ultrahigh resolution.
