Perturbation Theory for Open Two-Level Nonlinear Quantum Systems

Abstract

Perturbation theory is an important tool in quantum mechanics. In this paper, we extend the traditional perturbation theory to open nonlinear two-level systems, treating decoherence parameter 7 as a perturbation. By this virtue, we give a perturbative solution to the master equation, which describes a nonlinear open quantum system. The results show that for small decoherence rate 7, the ratio of the nonlinear rate C to the tunneling coefficient V (i.e., r=C/V) determines the validity of the perturbation theory. For small ratio r, the perturbation theory is valid, otherwise it yields wrong results.

Perturbation theory is an important tool in quantum mechanics. In this paper, we extend the traditional perturbation theory to open nonlinear two-level systems, treating decoherence parameter γ as a perturbation. By this virtue, we give a perturbative solution to the master equation, which describes a nonlinear open quantum system. The results show that for small decoherence rate γ, the ratio of the nonlinear rate C to the tunneling coefficient V (i.e., r = C / V ) determines the validity of the perturbation theory. For small ratio r , the perturbation theory is valid, otherwise it yields wrong results.

Perturbative and nonperturbative master equations for open quantum systems

Wusheng Zhu, HERSCHEL A. RABITZ

This paper develops perturbative and nonperturbative master equations for open quantum systems based on time-dependent variational functionals. The perturbative equations are more concise and suitable for dealing with cases of weak system-environment coupling for short evolution time scales. The nonperturbative equations are valid for all time and appropriate to treat cases of strong system-environment coupling. When a system contains an external control field, both the perturbative and nonperturbative master equations reveal the embedded control field dependence upon the system decoherence, which provides a basis for decoherence management.

Quantum mechanics in general quantum systems (III): open system dynamics

An Min Wang

We investigate the exact solution, perturbation theory and master equation of open system dynamics based on our serial studies on quantum mechanics in general quantum systems [An Min Wang, quant-ph/0611216 and quant-ph/0611217]. In a system-environment separated representation, a general and explicit solution of open system dynamics is obtained, and it is an exact solution since it includes all order approximations of perturbation. In terms of the cut-off approximation of perturbation and our improved scheme of perturbation theory, the improved form of the perturbed solution of open systems absorbing the partial contributions from the high order even all order approximations is deduced. Moreover, only under the factorizing initial condition, the exact master equation including all order approximations is proposed. Correspondingly, the perturbed master equation and its improved form different from the existed master equation are given. In special, the Redfield master equation is derived out without using Born-Markov approximation. The solution of open system dynamics in the Milburn model is also gained. As examples, Zurek model of two-state open system and its extension with two transverse fields are studied.

Open Quantum Systems And The Two-Level Atom Interacting With A Single Mode Of The Electromagnetic Field

A. Sãndulescu, E Stefnescu

In the framework of a general theory of open quantum systems, we obtain a quantum master equation for the two-level atom interacting with a single mode of the electromagnetic field. On this basis, we obtain new optical equations. In comparison with the conventional Bloch-Feynman optical equations which contain three phenomenological parameters, the new equations contain nine phenomenological parameters. New physical effects , due to the opening of the system, are predicted: 1) a resonance frequency shift, 2) an asymmetry of the spectral line, 3) a modification of the dependence of the absorbtion coefficient and of the nonlinear dephasing on the atomic detuning, and 4) an additional nonlinear dependence of the absorbtion coefficient on the electric field. For a rather small atom density when the fourth effect can be neglected,we found an analytical expression of the transmittivity characteristic of an optical bistable Fabry-Perot resonator and found a good agreement with the experiment.

Resonant Perturbation Theory of Decoherence and Relaxation of Quantum Bits

Marco Merkli, G. P. Berman, Israel Michael Sigal

We describe our recent results on the resonant perturbation theory of decoherence and relaxation for quantum systems with many qubits. The approach represents a rigorous analysis of the phenomenon of decoherence and relaxation for general N‐level systems coupled to reservoirs of bosonic fields. We derive a representation of the reduced dynamics valid for all times t ≥ 0 and for small but fixed interaction strength. Our approach does not involve master equation approximations and applies to a wide variety of systems which are not explicitly solvable.

Nonlinear thermodynamic quantum master equation: Properties and examples

Hans Christian Öttinger

The quantum master equation obtained from two different thermodynamic arguments is seriously nonlinear. We argue that, for quantum systems, nonlinearity occurs naturally in the step from reversible to irreversible equations and we analyze the nature and consequences of the nonlinear contribution. The thermodynamic nonlinearity naturally leads to canonical equilibrium solutions and extends the range of validity to lower temperatures. We discuss the Markovian character of the thermodynamic quantum master equation and introduce a solution strategy based on coupled evolution equations for the eigenstates and eigenvalues of the density matrix. The general ideas are illustrated for the two-level system and for the damped harmonic oscillator. Several conceptual implications of the nonlinearity of the thermodynamic quantum master equation are pointed out, including the absence of a Heisenberg picture and the resulting difficulties with defining multitime correlations.
