Abstract

We describe investigations into the conjugation of weak signals, corresponding to a few photons. We have used a variety of techniques, combining various methods of Brillouin amplification and phase conjugation with a laser pre-amplifier. Four Brillouin phase conjugation techniques were used to amplify or conjugate the signal, and in the case of amplification the conjugate can then be generated using conventional SBS.

The results of the study on phase conjugation of weak optical signals with an energy of several photons are considered. Basic concepts of a semi-classical theoretical approach to describe amplification and phase conjugation (PC) of such signals are presented. A review is given of the experimental investigations that allowed reaching a limiting (about 1 photon per mode) sensitivity of optical systems with PC-mirrors for a large (~105) number of resolution elements. High-sensitivity PC-mirror optical systems are demonstrated for a variety of applications.

Phase conjugation of single photons

Phase conjugation (PC) of extremely weak signals using a phase-conjugate mirror based on Mandelstam-Brillouin-enhanced four-wave mixing, coupled with an optical quantum amplifier, is considered. PC of a pulse with energy 4*10/sup -17/ J is achieved. PC conditions for amplified superluminescence noise of the optical quantum amplifier are specified and the limiting parameters are estimated. It is shown experimentally that if the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) is equal to unity, the energy of an input signal for which phase conjugation is possible corresponds to 30 photons per transverse mode.>

Phase conjugation of nonstationary optical signals

J. A. Tataronis, Bahaa E. A. Saleh

The generation of phase conjugated replicas of optical signals has been the subject of many theoretical and experimental studies. Phase conjugation of harmonic signals is a byproduct of certain nonlinear processes such as degenerate four- wave mixing and stimulated Brillouin scattering. Although conjugation of steady signals is well established, the possibility and the effectiveness of conjugating unsteady signals remain largely unexplored. When the envelope of an optical signal varies, new physical phenomena in the conjugation process arise. As previously shown,1 dispersion in the conjugation process distorts the phase conjugate replica of a pulsed signal. Distortion appears even if the response of the medium to the applied optical signal is instantaneous.
