High Resolution Bi-Photon Spectral Correlation Measurements from a Silicon Nanowire in the Quantum and Classical Regimes

Abstract

We use classical stimulated four-wave mixing to directly characterize quantum spectral correlations generated in a silicon nanowire for two different pump durations. Signal to noise is increased and acquisition time reduced compared to coincidence detection.

The growing requirement for photon pairs with specific spectral correlations in quantum optics experiments has created a demand for fast, high resolution and accurate source characterisation. A promising tool for such characterisation uses classical stimulated processes, in which an additional seed laser stimulates photon generation yielding much higher count rates, as recently demonstrated for a χ(2) integrated source in A. Eckstein et al. Laser Photon. Rev. 8, L76 (2014). In this work we extend these results to χ(3) integrated sources, directly measuring for the first time the relation between spectral correlation measurements via stimulated and spontaneous four wave mixing in an integrated optical waveguide, a silicon nanowire. We directly confirm the speed-up due to higher count rates and demonstrate that this allows additional resolution to be gained when compared to traditional coincidence measurements without any increase in measurement time. As the pump pulse duration can influence the degree of spectral correlation, all of our measurements are taken for two different pump pulse widths. This allows us to confirm that the classical stimulated process correctly captures the degree of spectral correlation regardless of pump pulse duration, and cements its place as an essential characterisation method for the development of future quantum integrated devices.

Manipulation and characterisation of two photon spectral correlation states in nonlinear devices

In quantum photonics, the requirement for photon pairs with specific quantum states has led to a demand for a fast, high resolution and accurate characterisation of photon pair sources. However, current quantum methods of characterisation suffer from limited accuracy and resolution, and only consist of intensity measurements that prevent access to phase-sensitive measurement photon pairs. A promising tool that addresses these challenges, uses the classical analogue of nonlinear processes to stimulate photon generation, yielding much higher count rates that allows for a higher resolution and accurate photon pair source characterisation. Furthermore, this classical measurement allows for an innovative method to perform full phase-sensitive quantum tomography of photon pair sources that was previous thought to be experimentally challenging to obtain. This thesis examines and compares the quantum and classical method of characterisation of spectral correlations in χ^3 nonlinear devices; namely two integrated silicon nanowires, and a highly nonlinear fibre. In the first study, we use stimulated nonlinear process to confirm the speed-up of characterisation of photon pairs and demonstrate that additional resolution is gained when compared to the traditional coincidence measurements with no increase in measurement time. By applying this technique with phase-sensitive amplification to another identical silicon nanowire, the first phase sensitive measurements are presented showing details that are otherwise hidden in traditional intensity measurements. Furthermore, phase-sensitive measurement of a highly nonlinear fibre shows that phase-sensitive measurements have excellent sensitivity to small features when compared to the traditional intensity measurements.

Energy correlations of photon pairs generated by a silicon microring resonator probed by Stimulated Four Wave Mixing

Compact silicon integrated devices, such as micro-ring resonators, have recently been demonstrated as efficient sources of quantum correlated photon pairs. The mass production of integrated devices demands the implementation of fast and reliable techniques to monitor the device performances. In the case of time-energy correlations, this is particularly challenging, as it requires high spectral resolution that is not currently achievable in coincidence measurements. Here we reconstruct the joint spectral density of photons pairs generated by spontaneous four-wave mixing in a silicon ring resonator by studying the corresponding stimulated process, namely stimulated four wave mixing. We show that this approach, featuring high spectral resolution and short measurement times, allows one to discriminate between nearly-uncorrelated and highly-correlated photon pairs.

High repetition rate correlated photon pair generation in integrated silicon nanowires

Integrated single-photon sources are a key component for photonic quantum technology but are generally limited to low single-photon rates. For sources based on photon pair generation by four-wave mixing, increasing the repetition rate of pump laser pulses is a straightforward way to enhance the single-photon rate, but the benefits and practical limitations have not yet been demonstrated and analyzed in a CMOS-compatible platform. In this work, we demonstrate correlated photon pair generation in integrated silicon nanowires and systematically analyze the count rate and coincidence to accidental ratio as the pump rate is varied between 156.25 MHz and 10 GHz. We show that the highest useful pump rate is limited by the timing resolution of the single-photon detection system, and that in this regime, the nonlinear loss of the silicon nanowire does not have a significant effect on the single-photon generation.

High-resolution measurement of energy correlations of photon pairs generated in silicon ring resonators

Silicon micro-ring resonators have been demonstrated to be potential “on- chip” efficient sources of time-energy entangled photons. In these devices, photon pairs are generated by spontaneous four-wave-mixing (SFWM), an elastic scattering event involving two pump photons that results in the generation of an idler and a signal photon. The mass production of such integrated devices for quantum optic experiment requires the implementation of fast and reliable techniques to monitor the emitted two-photon state as well as the device performances. In this work we show that the joint spectral density of photon pairs that would be generated by SFWM in a silicon ring resonator can be measured with unprecedented resolution and speed, improving of several orders of magnitudes the results of traditional approaches based on coincidence measurements.

Fast and highly resolved capture of the joint spectral density of photon pairs

Controlling the spatial and spectral–temporal properties of photon pairs produced in artificially structured materials is fundamental to the realization of numerous photonic quantum information applications. Tailoring the joint spectral properties of photon pairs is of particular importance for applications relying on time–energy entanglement, high-visibility interference, and heralding. Yet measuring the joint spectral properties is a time-consuming task requiring coincidence counting, typically resulting in low-resolution spectra with a poor signal-to-noise ratio. In this work we capture the joint spectral correlations of photon pairs that would be produced in optical fibers with unprecedented speed, resolution, and signal-to-noise ratio, using a scheme based on stimulated four-wave mixing. We also illustrate that this technique can be used in engineering joint spectral correlations, making it a powerful tool for studying quantum states.
