Low-temperature properties of the generalized two-chain quantum spin model

Sooa Park, K Lee

We consider an exactly solvable two-chain quantum spin- model in a generalized form with enhanced spin frustration. This model is exactly diagonalized via Bethe's ansatz. The low-temperature specific heat of the system is obtained with and without a magnetic field, using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations. We also calculate the magnetic susceptibility in a sufficiently weak field, yielding typical logarithmic corrections. The spin frustration affects only the amplitudes in the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat. This extends the previous results for a simple two-chain quantum spin model to the generalized one.

Universal emergence of the one-third plateau in the magnetization process of frustrated quantum spin chains

Fabian Heidrich‐Meisner, I. A. Sergienko, Adrian E. Feiguin +1 more

We present a numerical study of the magnetization process of frustrated quantum spin-$S$ chains with $S=1,3∕2,2$ as well as the classical limit. Using the exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization techniques, we provide evidence that a plateau at one third of the saturation magnetization exists in the magnetization curve of frustrated spin-$S$ chains with $S>1∕2$. Similar to the case of $S=1∕2$, this plateau state breaks the translational symmetry of the Hamiltonian and realizes an up-up-down pattern in the spin component parallel to the external field. Our study further shows that this plateau exists both in the cases of an isotropic exchange and in the easy-axis regime for spin-$S=1$, $3∕2$, and 2, but is absent in classical frustrated spin chains with isotropic interactions. We discuss the magnetic phase diagram of frustrated spin-1 and spin-$3∕2$ chains as well as other emergent features of the magnetization process such as kink singularities, jumps, and even-odd effects. A quantitative comparison of the one-third plateau in the easy-axis regime between spin-1 and spin-$3∕2$ chains on the one hand and the classical frustrated chain on the other hand indicates that the critical frustration and the phase boundaries of this state rapidly approach the classical result as the spin $S$ increases.

The frustrated ferromagnetic S = 1/2 Heisenberg chain in a magnetic field – How multipolar spin correlations emerge from magnetically ordered states

Andreas Martin Läuchli, Julien Sudan, Andreas Lüscher

We present the phase diagram of the frustrated ferromagnetic S = 1/2 Heisenberg J 1 - J 2 chain in a magnetic field, obtained by large scale exact diagonalizations and densitymatrix-renormalization-group simulations. A vector chirally ordered state, metamagnetic behavior and a sequence of spin multipolar Luttinger liquid phases up to hexadecupolar order are found. Starting from classical considerations, we point out that various multipolar correlations are imprinted in a magnetic state and that they can survive the onset of frustration and quantum fluctuations which destroy the conventional magnetic order. Our results also shed new light on previously discovered spin multipolar phases in two-dimensional S = 1/2 quantum magnets in a magnetic field.

We present a numerical study of the magnetization process of frustrated quantum spin-SSS chains with S=1,3∕2,2S=1,3∕2,2S=1,3∕2,2 as well as the classical limit. Using the exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization techniques, we provide evidence that a plateau at one third of the saturation magnetization exists in the magnetization curve of frustrated spin-SSS chains with S>1∕2S>1∕2S>1∕2. Similar to the case of S=1∕2S=1∕2S=1∕2, this plateau state breaks the translational symmetry of the Hamiltonian and realizes an up-up-down pattern in the spin component parallel to the external field. Our study further shows that this plateau exists both in the cases of an isotropic exchange and in the easy-axis regime for spin-S=1S=1S=1, 3∕23∕23∕2, and 2, but is absent in classical frustrated spin chains with isotropic interactions. We discuss the magnetic phase diagram of frustrated spin-1 and spin-3∕23∕23∕2 chains as well as other emergent features of the magnetization process such as kink singularities, jumps, and even-odd effects. A quantitative comparison of the one-third plateau in the easy-axis regime between spin-1 and spin-3∕23∕23∕2 chains on the one hand and the classical frustrated chain on the other hand indicates that the critical frustration and the phase boundaries of this state rapidly approach the classical result as the spin SSS increases.
