Trapping of optical excitation in Nd-doped Pr F3

John Hegarty, David L. Huber, William M. Yen

The dynamics of trapping of optical excitation in a disordered system of ions in a solid is studied using time-resolved fluorescence measurements. In the system Pr${\mathrm{F}}_{3}$ doped with Nd, the randomly distributed Nd ions act as sinks for the Pr excitation. The transfer to the Nd traps can occur in conjunction with transfer among the Pr ions. In this system the Pr-Pr transfer is strongly temperature dependent while the Pr-Nd transfer is temperature independent at low temperatures. By changing the temperature we can span the range from no Pr-Pr transfer to very (infinitely) fast Pr-Pr transfer in one single system. We have identified these limits. In addition we have placed boundaries on the applicability of the diffusion and hopping models in describing trapping in the intermediate temperature regime where the Pr-Pr and Pr-Nd transfer rates are comparable.

Measurement of the electron affinity of praseodymium

V. T. Davis, J. S. Thompson

The electron affinity (EA) of praseodymium (Pr) has been measured using laser photodetachment electron spectroscopy. The EA of Pr( 4 I 9/2 ) was determined to be 0.962±0.024 eV. The data also show that Pr - has at least one bound excited state with a binding energy of 0.866±0.018 eV relative to the ground state of the Pr atom. The present experimental measurements are compared to a recent calculation of the electronic structure of Pr - .

When Are Popescu-Rohrlich Boxes and Random Access Codes Equivalent?

Andrzej Grudka, Karol Horodecki, Michał Horodecki +2 more

We study a problem of interconvertibility of two supraquantum resources: one is the so-called Popescu-Rohrlich (PR) box, which violates Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality up to the maximal algebraic bound, and the second is the so-called random access code (RAC). The latter is a functionality that enables Bob (receiver) to choose one of two bits of Alice. It is known that a PR box supplemented with one bit of communication can be used to simulate a RAC. We ask the converse question: to what extent can a RAC can simulate a PR box? To this end, we introduce a "racbox": a box such that when it is supplemented with one bit of communication it offers a RAC. As said, a PR box can simulate a racbox. The question we raise is whether any racbox can simulate a PR box. We show that a nonsignaling racbox, indeed, can simulate a PR box; hence, these two resources are equivalent. We also provide an example of a signaling racbox that cannot simulate a PR box. We give a resource inequality between racboxes and PR boxes and show that it is saturated.
