Abstract

We discuss an atomic system comprising a single discrete, ground level and two orthogonal continua. We assume that the continua are structured m we discuss two cases: that of Lorentzian continua, and the case of Gaussian structures. Our system is irradiated by an external laser field in the form of a train of ultra-short pulses. The analytic formulas for long-time photoelectron spectra are found and discussed for various values of the parameters describing our system.

Computer Simulation of Above-threshold Ionization Induced by a Train of Ultra-short Laser Pulses

J. ŚwiatłLowski, W. Leoński

The atomic system under discussion contains one discrete ground level and two orthogonal continua coupled by a train of ultra-short laser pulses separated by a time interval T. Recurrent relations derived for the probability amplitudes enable us to simulate the time evolution of the system. We discuss the cases of Lorentzian and Gaussian continua, and perform simulations for specified widths and shapes of the continua, the laser strength, and the time interval in their effect on the probabilities of finding electrons in the atomic states.

Quantum Laser Field Effect on the Photoelectron Spectrum for Auto-ionizing Systems

W. Leoński, V. Bu[zbreve]ek

We discuss an atomic system containing one auto-ionizing level and driven by an external laser field. We assume that the field is of quantum nature and two cases of its initial state are discussed: Fock state and coherent state. For this system long-time photoelectron spectra are found. Due to the quantum nature of the field the spectrum differs from quasi-classical. A novel kind of quantum interference phenomenon, which we refer to as ‘comb confluence of coherences’, occurs.

Photoelectron spectra in an autoionization system interacting with a neighboring atom

Jan Peřina, A. Lukš, W. Leoński +1 more

Photoelectron ionization spectra of an autoionization system with one discrete level interacting with a neighbor two-level atom are discussed. The formula for long-time ionization spectra is derived. According to this formula, the spectra can be composed of up to eight peaks. Moreover, the Fano-like zeros for weak optical pumping are identified in these spectra. The conditional ionization spectra depending on the state of the neighbor atom exhibit oscillations at the Rabi frequency. Dynamical spectral zeros occurring once per the Rabi period are revealed in these spectra.

Effect of additional dc-field coupling on the long-time photoelectron spectrum from a system with double autoionizing levels

W. Leoński, R. Tanaś

The atomic model that contains two autoionization levels coupled to the discrete ground state by an external laser field is discussed. In addition both autoionizing levels are coupled mutually by the dc-electric-field gradient. The analytical formula for the long-time photoelectron spectrum is found for this system. Calculations are performed that are valid for any strength of the laser field and the dc-electric-field gradient. The effects of the additional coupling by the dc-electric-field gradient on the photoelectron spectrum are discussed and illustrated graphically.

Two-frequency above threshold ionization with pulses

L. Wang, J. W. Haus, K. Rzazewski

We solve a model with one bound state and two continua.1 Two lasers are used to study the above threshold ionization process. The first laser couples the electron in a bound state to a continuum state. The photons are assumed to be energetic enough to promote the electron directly into the continuum far from the threshold; this avoids complications due to the Rydberg levels and the ponderomotive shifts of the threshold. The second laser mixes the electron wavefunction between two continuum states (C—C transitions); since we avoid the rotating wave approximation, multiple transitions between these continua are allowed. We find that the ionization rate is unaffected by the C—C transitions. Our model of hydrogenic atoms allows redistribution among the continua only during the ionization process and the photoelectron spectra exhibits peak suppression; i.e., the population is not the strongest at the energy of the ionization laser.

Photoionization by pulses with a modulated frequency

Piotr Bała, Jacek Matulewski, Andrzej Raczyński +1 more

The dynamics of the bound-state populations and the photoelectron spectra are calculated for model atomic systems irradiated by a pulse with a harmonically modulated frequency. For a system including a single bound state a model is adopted, which takes into account the threshold behavior typical of negative ions and admits continuum-continuum transitions. For a model one-dimensional atom the results are obtained through a numerical integration of the Schr\"odinger equation. The case of a resonant ionization is also considered. The modulation of the frequency results in changing the instantaneous rate of decay of the initial state, in inducing additional population oscillations for multilevel systems, and in additional peaks in the photoelectron spectra.
