Abstract

We proposed a four-level system to explore the quantum interference effects on optical amplification. We found that the gain of the probe.including positions and values of gain peaks, can be adjusted by changing the coherent field and the incoherent pumping. At the same time,we can also modify the absorption profile of electromagnetically induced transparency by the incoherent pump. The results provide a method to flatten the gain of Erbium-doped fibre amplifiers.

Quantum interference effects on the probe amplification without and with inversion in a four-level system

Bing Zhang, Weihua Xu, Zhang Hui-Fang +1 more

A four-level system driven by two coherent fields is considered. It is shown that in the presence of an incoherent pump, the probe gain at a short wavelength can be achieved due to the quantum interference. Our density matrix calculation provides the conditions for probe amplification from different origins, including gain without population inversion on any state basis, gain with population inversion on the dressed-state basis and gain with population inversion on the bare-state basis. Also, by controlling the Rabi frequency of the coupling field a total change from non-inversion to inversion can be achieved which does not depend on the intensity of the incoherent pump.

Coupling effects in saturable gain media with interfering coherent optical amplifier pump beams

Summary form only given. We investigate special coupling effects in an Er-doped optical fibre amplifier, of which the gain medium is optically pumped by two mutually coherent counterpropagating pump waves that interfere inside the amplifier. The result is a unique filtering behavior where the signal gain becomes dependent on the wavelength and on the optical phases of the pump waves. This effect can be used for obtaining filters and single-mode operation of lasers. The wavelength of such a laser can be controlled by changing the wavelength or the phases of the pump waves. We have also shown previously that bidirectional pumping may cause bistability.

Quantum-interference effects on the index of refraction in an Er3+ -doped yttrium aluminum garnet crystal

Huifang Zhang, Jin‐Hui Wu, Xue-Mei Su +1 more

A four-level system is proposed to produce large index of refraction accompanied by vanishing absorption in the ${\mathrm{Er}}^{3+}$-doped yttrium aluminum garnet crystal. It is found that the separation of the two absorption peaks and the maximum value of index of refraction with zero absorption can be adjusted by changing the coherent field and the incoherent pumping. It is shown that a higher index of refraction with zero absorption can be easily obtained when the coherent field is off resonance.
