Spectroscopy of composite solid-state spin environments for improved metrology with spin ensembles

Nir Bar‐Gill, Linh Pham, Chinmay Belthangady +6 more

For precision coherent measurements with ensembles of quantum spins the relevant Figure-of-Merit (FOM) is the product of polarized spin density and coherence lifetime, which is generally limited by the dynamics of the spin environment. Here, we apply a coherent spectroscopic technique to characterize the dynamics of the composite solid-state spin environment of Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers in room temperature diamond. For samples of very different NV densities and impurity spin concentrations, we show that NV FOM values can be almost an order of magnitude larger than previously achieved in other room-temperature solid-state spin systems, and within an order of magnitude of the state-of-the-art atomic system. We also identify a new mechanism for suppression of electronic spin bath dynamics in the presence of a nuclear spin bath of sufficient concentration. This suppression could inform efforts to further increase the FOM for solid-state spin ensemble metrology and collective quantum information processing.

Probing the strongly driven spin-boson model in a superconducting quantum circuit

Luca Magazzù, P. Forn-Díaz, Ron Belyansky +6 more

Quantum two-level systems interacting with the surroundings are ubiquitous in nature. The interaction suppresses quantum coherence and forces the system towards a steady state. Such dissipative processes are captured by the paradigmatic spin-boson model, describing a two-state particle, the "spin", interacting with an environment formed by harmonic oscillators. A fundamental question to date is to what extent intense coherent driving impacts a strongly dissipative system. Here we investigate experimentally and theoretically a superconducting qubit strongly coupled to an electromagnetic environment and subjected to a coherent drive. This setup realizes the driven Ohmic spin-boson model. We show that the drive reinforces environmental suppression of quantum coherence, and that a coherent-to-incoherent transition can be achieved by tuning the drive amplitude. An out-of-equilibrium detailed balance relation is demonstrated. These results advance fundamental understanding of open quantum systems and bear potential for the design of entangled light-matter states.

Floquet control of quantum dissipation in spin chains

Chong Chen, Jun‐Hong An, Hong‐Gang Luo +2 more

Controlling the decoherence induced by the interaction of quantum system with its environment is a fundamental challenge in quantum technology. Utilizing Floquet theory, we explore the constructive role of temporal periodic driving in suppressing decoherence of a spin-1/2 particle coupled to a spin bath. It is revealed that, accompanying the formation of a Floquet bound state in the quasienergy spectrum of the whole system including the system and its environment, the dissipation of the spin system can be inhibited and the system tends to coherently synchronize with the driving. It can be seen as an analog to the decoherence suppression induced by the structured environment in spatially periodic photonic crystal setting. Comparing with other decoherence control schemes, our protocol is robust against the fluctuation of control parameters and easy to realize in practice. It suggests a promising perspective of periodic driving in decoherence control.
