All-optical formation of molecules with spin degree of freedom in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate

Jun Kobayashi, Yumiko Izumi, M. Kumakura +1 more

We have performed a two-photon photoassociation experiment in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate of 87 Rb with the spin degree of freedom, which is created by an all-optical method with CO 2 lasers. The spinor character of the created molecules has been revealed by the photoassociation spectrum with a new structure. The hyperfine structure of the created molecules near the dissociation limit is identified by observations of the Zeeman and AC-Stark effects of the molecules. We have also demonstrated the spin-selective creation of molecules. This result would open the new possibility of research on novel molecular spinor BEC.

Molecular hyperfine structure in the photoassociation spectroscopy of laser cooled atoms

Carl J. Williams, Paul S. Julienne

The photoassociation of colliding ultracold trapped atoms permits the observation of high resolution molecular spectra of high lying vibrational levels with low total angular momentum and outer turning points greater than 50 Å. This paper describes how the hyperfine structure of alkali dimer molecules at large internuclear separation can be used to assign the electronic character of the observed photoassociation spectra and how hyperfine structure helps to explain the observed photoassociation spectrum of the attractive electronic states of the Na2 molecule that correlate with Na(3 2S)+Na(3 2P3/2) atoms.

Photoassociation spectroscopy of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

Christopher D. Hamley, Eva Bookjans, G. Behinaein +2 more

We report on the high resolution photoassociation spectroscopy of a $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate to the ${1}_{g}({P}_{3∕2})$ $v=152$ excited molecular states. We demonstrate the use of spin dependent photoassociation to experimentally identify the molecular states and their corresponding initial scattering channel. These identifications are in excellent agreement with the eigenvalues of a hyperfine-rotational Hamiltonian. Using the observed spectra we estimate the change in scattering length and identify photoassociation laser light frequency ranges that maximize the change in the spin-dependent mean-field interaction energy.

We report on the high resolution photoassociation spectroscopy of a 87Rb^{87}\mathrm{Rb}87Rb spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate to the 1g(P3∕2){1}_{g}({P}_{3∕2})1g(P3∕2) v=152v=152v=152 excited molecular states.
