Controlled Decoherence in Multiple Beam Ramsey Interference

Michael Mei, Martin Weitz

We have scattered photons from an interfering path of a multiple beam Ramsey interference experiment realized with a cesium atomic beam. It is demonstrated that in multiple beam interference the decoherence from photon scattering cannot only lead to a decrease but, under certain conditions, also to an increase of the Michelson fringe contrast. In all cases, the atomic quantum state loses information with photon scattering, as "which-path" information is carried away by the photon field. We outline an approach to quantify this which-path information from observed fringe signals, which allows for an appropriate measure of decoherence in multiple path interference.

Interference effects in spontaneous two-photon parametric scattering from two macroscopic regions

A. V. Burlakov, Maria V. Chekhova, Давид Николаевич Клышко +4 more

Two types of interference were observed using two-photon spontaneous parametric radiation from two nonlinear interaction regions. Two experimental setups analogous to the Young and Mach-Zehnder interferometers were used. An interesting feature of the two-photon Young interference is the opposite conditions for its observation by two different methods: by measuring intensity of light at a single frequency and by measuring correlation of intensities at two conjugated frequencies (method of coincidences). Two-photon Mach-Zehnder interference resembles the Ramsey method of separated fields, which is used in beam spectroscopy. A simple macroscopic quantum model agrees well with the experimental results and enables their interpretation in terms of ``biphotons'' carrying information about the pump phase.

Single-atom and two-atom Ramsey interferometry with quantized fields

G. S. Agarwal, Pradyumna K. Pathak, Marlan O. Scully

Implications of field quantization on Ramsey interferometry are discussed and general conditions for the occurrence of interference are obtained. Interferences do not occur if the fields in two Ramsey zones have a precise number of photons. However, in this case we show how an analog of Hanbury-Brown Twiss photon-photon correlation interferometry can be used to discern a variety of interference effects as the two independent Ramsey zones get entangled by the passage of the first atom. Interferences are restored by working with fields at a single-photon level. Generation of entangled states including states such as $|2,0〉{+e}^{i\ensuremath{\theta}}|0,2〉$ is discussed.
