Abstract

Linear superposition principle is a basic characteristic of quantum mechanics. The quantum interference of matter wave results from this principle. Recently, considerable effort has been devoted to the study of the properties of superpositions of two or more coherent states, i.e. the Schr(?)dinger cat states. It is shown that the superpositions of coherent states have properties different from those of the coherent state, such as the higher-order squeezing, sub-Poissonian distribution, oscillatory photon statistics and antibunching effect, because of the quantum interference between the components of the cat states. The emergence of these non-classical effects makes the study of the Schr(?)dinger

Macroscopic superposition states of light via two-photon resonant interaction of atoms with cavity field

Vladimír Bužek

Recently considerable attention has been devoted to description of macroscopic superpositions of coherent states of lightl. This interest in part arises due to the fact that quantum interference be- tween component states leads to various nonclassical effects such as quadrature squeezing, higher order squeezing, sub-Poissonian photon statistics and oscillations in the photon number distribution.

Superpositions of coherent states: Squeezing and dissipation

Vladimír Bužek, A. Vidiella-Barranco, P. L. Knight

In this paper we discuss the nonclassical properties of quantum superpositions of coherent states of light. Using general expressions for the Wigner functions of superposition states we analyze the consequences of quantum interference between coherent states. We describe in detail nonclassical properties of a superposition of two coherent states. In particular, we study the oscillatory behavior of the photon number distribution of the even and odd coherent states. We show under which conditions a superposition of two coherent states can exhibit second- and fourth-order squeezing or sub-Poissonian photon statistics. We examine the sensitivity of nonclassical effects such as oscillations in the photon number distribution or second-order squeezing to dissipation. We demonstrate that quantities such as the photon number distribution and interferences in phase space are highly sensitive to even a quite small dissipative coupling, because they depend on all moments of the field observables, and higher moments decay more rapidly than lower moments. Quantities such as quadrature squeezing, on the other hand, are more robust against dissipation because they involve only lower moments. Finally, we find a remarkable effect whereby fourth-order squeezing is generated by damping.

Quantum statistical properties of phase-type three-headed Schrodinger cat state

Lin Dun-Qing, Zhu Ze-Qun, Wang Zu-Jian +1 more

Quantum superposition is a fundamental principle of quantum mechanics, which provides a crucial basis to observe phenomena beyond the predictions of classical physics. For example, a quantum entangled state can exhibit stronger correlation than classically possible one. In quantum state engineering, many new quantum states can be obtained from the superposition of many known states. In recent decades, the superposition of coherent states (CSs) with the same amplitude but two different phases has been a subject of great interest. This superposition state was often called Schrodinger cat state (here, we also name it 2-headed cat state (2HCS)), which becomes an important tool to study a lot of fundamental issues. Surprisingly, some studies have extended the quantum superposition to involving more than two component coherent states. In order to produce the superposition of three photons, people have considered the superposition of coherent states with three different phases (here, we also name it 3-headed cat state (3HCS)). Furthermore, in microwave cavity quantum electrodynamics of bang-bang quantum Zeno dynamics control, people have proposed the superposition of coherent states with four different phases (here, we also name it 4-headed cat state (4HCS)). In this paper, we make a detailed investigation on the quantum statistical properties of a phase-type 3HCS. These properties include photon number distribution, average photon number, sub-Poissionian distribution, squeezing effect, and Wigner function, etc. We derive their analytical expressions and make numerical simulations for these properties. The results are compared with the counterparts of the CS, the 2HCS and the 4HCS. The conclusions are obtained as follows. 1) The CS, the 2HCS, the 3HCS and the 4HCS have k, 2k, 3k and 4k photon number components, respectively (k is an integer); 2) small difference in average photon number among these quantum states in small-amplitude range can be observed, while their average photon numbers become almost equal in large-amplitude range; 3) the CS exhibits Poisson distribution, and the 2HCS, the 3HCS and the 4HCS exhibit super-Poisson distributions in most amplitude ranges, however, sub-Poisson distribution can be seen for the 3HCS and the 4HCS in some specific amplitude ranges; 4) except for the 2HCS that may have the squeezing property, no squeezing properties can be found in the CS, the 3HCS and the 4HCS; 5) negative values can exist in the Wigner functions for the 2HCS, the 3HCS and the 4HCS, while it is not found in the CS. Similar to the 2HCS and 4HCS, the Wigner function of the 3HCS has negative component, which implies its nonclassicality. Different from the 2HCS, the 3HCS exhibits sub-Poisson photon number distribution in a certain amplitude range, it is weaker than that of the 4HCS. At the same time, no squeezing is found in the 3 or 4HCS, which is another difference from the 2HCS.

Real and imaginary negative binomial states

Jing Liao, Xiaoguang Wang, Ling-An Wu +1 more

The real and imaginary negative binomial states formed by a superposition of the negative binomial states are introduced. The sub-Poissonian statistics, Wigner function and squeezing properties of the real and imaginary states are studied in detail. The oscillatory character of the photon distribution due to the quantum interference between the two components is shown. Moreover, we find that these states are real and imaginary nonlinear Schrödinger cat states and give the corresponding ladder operator formalisms. We also discuss how to generate these general real quantum superposition states based on the intensity-dependent Jaynes-Cummings model.

Multiphoton Coherent States and the Linear Superposition Principle

Igor Jex, Vladimír Bužek

We show that multiphoton coherent states can be expressed as linear quantum superpositions of a finite number of generalized coherent states. Quantum interferences between component states lead to appearance of non-classical effects such as oscillations in the photon number distribution, quadrature squeezing, SU(1, 1) squeezing and others.

Schrödinger-cat states in the resonant Jaynes-Cummings model: Collapse and revival of oscillations of the photon-number distribution

Vladimír Bužek, H. M. Moya-Cessa, P. L. Knight +1 more

The Jaynes-Cummings model of optical resonance describes the simplest fully quantized interaction between two quantum systems of different nature: a two-level atom (fermionic system) and a quantized field mode (bosonic system). This interaction leads to extreme quantum entanglement of the atom and field. However, the model also predicts that, at precisely half of the revival time, the atom and field become asymptotically disentangled. This disentanglement becomes more exact as the coherent-state amplitude increases. In this paper we investigate the nature of the pure-field-state superposition generated at such times. We show that this superposition is of distinguishable states of the field with the same amplitude but opposite phase. Interference between these components leads to nonclassical oscillations in photon-number distributions and squeezing in quadratures of the field. The Schr\"odinger-cat states of the field are highly transient, and depend very sensitively on the interaction time, the initial intensity of the field, and the atom-field detuning.
